Boys and Girls Soccer Tournaments Set for 20th Year
A field of 299 boys teams, a record for the 20th consecutive year, and 258 girls teams are entered as pairings for the 20th Annual IHSAA Soccer State Tournaments were announced this morning by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.
Boys sectional action at 64 sites – 32 in each class – will be played Monday, Oct. 7 through Saturday, Oct. 12. Sixteen regional sites – eight in each class – will host two rounds each on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Saturday, Oct. 19. Semi-states will be played at four sites on Saturday, Oct. 26 in a two-round format with the survivors squaring off in the state championship matches on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Indianapolis.
In Class 2A, the top-ranked and defending state champion Columbus North boys team will host cross-town rival Columbus East in Sectional 27 while Class A No. 1 Guerin Catholic drew a bye and will host the the Park Tudor-Heritage Christian winner in Sectional 47. Fort Wayne Canterbury, last year’s Class A state champion and now playing in 2A, will host Fort Wayne Snider in Sectional 10. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 15 in 2A according to this week’s poll from the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association.
The girls sectionals – 32 in Class 2A and 16 in Class A – will also run Oct. 7-12. Regionals will be played Wednesday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 19 with Class 2A matches in a two-round, Wednesday-Saturday format. The Class A contests differ as a one-match affair played that Saturday. Semi-states in both classes will be played Saturday, Oct. 26 in a two-round format with the winners advancing to the two state championship matches on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Class 2A, No. 1 Avon girls team will take on Danville in Sectional 18 at Plainfield while Class A top-ranked Evansville Mater Dei will begin its post-season against Princeton in Sectional 48 at North Posey. Class 2A No. 5 Evansville Memorial will begin defense of last year’s state championship against Evansville Harrison in Sectional 32 at Evansville Reitz, while last year’s Class A state champ Mishawaka Marian has moved up to 2A where it is currently ranked No. 14. The Knights picked up the bye and will host the Michigan City-South Bend Washington winner in Sectional 5.
Notables
About the Draw
To conduct the random drawing for the state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery-style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all sectionals, regionals and semi-states to determine every team’s placement in the bracket.

About the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA)
Founded in 1903, the purpose of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) is to encourage, regulate and give direction to wholesome amateur interschool athletic competition between its 412 member schools. The Association provides state championship tournament series in 20 sports, 10 for girls and 10 for boys. Approximately 160,000 student athletes participate in IHSAA sports on an annual basis.
