2000 IHSAA Class 2A Baseball State Finals

June 23-24, 2000

Taylor wins first IHSAA title in any sport

Ted Secrease delivered a mammoth two-run homer to left center in the top of the second inning to help Taylor to an early 3-0 lead and the Titans rolled to a 12-1 victory for their first IHSAA state championship in any sport.

The senior added a two-run triple in the top of the seventh to his performance. He finished 2 of 3 with a sacrifice fly and five RBI. The Titans collected 12 hits (four for extra bases) and stranded only one runner.

Ranked No. 1 in the final Class 2A Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, Taylor (30-4) closed the season with a 10-game winning streak and outscored its opponents 46-7 in six postseason games.

Brian Collins (7-0) went the distance for the pitching victory. The lone run yielded by Collins came in the bottom of the seventh and was unearned due to a Taylor’s only error in the game. The 6-0 right-hander scattered five hits, while striking out three and walking just one.

North Montgomery finished 21-10 while making its first appearance in the IHSAA Baseball State Finals.

Semifinals

Taylor, North Montgomery move on

Taylor and North Montgomery both advanced to their first championship game with semifinal victories in the IHSAA Class 2A State Finals on Friday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

Taylor (29-4) scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and went on to defeat Boone Grove, 6-1, in the first game, while North Montgomery (21-9) used a three-run fifth inning to down North Posey in the second game, 5-4.

In the third inning of game one, Taylor’s Brian Collins walked to lead off and moved to second base on Brad Collins’ single one batter later. After both runners advanced on an attempted pick-off play, Craig Denison then followed with a single to leftfield that scored Brian Collins leaving runners at third and first. Joey Keck then sent a sacrifice fly to left to score Brad Collins. Dennison, who advanced to third base on another attempted pick-off play, scored on Ted Secrease’s sac fly to centerfield.

Taylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brad Collins tripled scoring Brian Collins from first base.

Boone Grove tallied its only run in the top of the second inning when Taylor pitcher Brad Collins balked with the bases loaded scoring Chad Hood tying the game at 1-1.

Brad Collins and Craig Denison finished an identical 2-for-3 with a run and RBI each for Taylor. Collins (7-3) was the winning pitcher and Dan Deeb (10-2) absorbed the loss for Boone Grove, which ended its season at 28-7.

In game two, North Posey scored a run in each of the first three innings to lead 3-2.

North Montgomery then took control of the game in the top of the fifth with three runs of its own. Jason Reece’s bases loaded single scored Josh Bronaugh and one batter later Jeremy Priest hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Brandon Stephens. Jason Sulc then followed with a two out single that plated Alex Blue. Bonaugh and Stephens each singled to start the inning and Blue walked to set up Reece’s at-bat.

Reece finished the game 4-for-4 and Sulc ended 2-for-4. North Posey’s Ryan Mobley went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Reece (7-0) was the winning pitcher and Nathan Esche (9-3) took the loss for North Posey, which finished 21-11.
