Triton wins first IHSAA baseball title

Triton scored three runs in the first inning and went on to a 13-0 victory over Adams Central in the Class A state championship game Saturday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

It was the first baseball title in the school’s history (first in any boys sport) and the third IHSAA state title overall, with all coming in the last two years. Triton’s girls basketball team won the IHSAA Class A crown in 2000 and 2001.

The Trojans (24-10), coached by Jim Shively, hit the Adams Central pitching staff for three runs in the first inning. Triton added two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings and six more in the top of the seventh.

The 13 runs set a Class A championship game record and, at the conclusion of the 2001 state finals, ranked as the fifth-most ever recorded in a championship game. Three of the top five marks for most runs scored in a championship game occurred in 2001.

Jacob Burnett pitched a complete game for the win (5-2) allowing only three hits and fanning seven batters. Burnett, also produced offensively going 4 for 4, scoring three runs and batted in another.

Joey Potter went 2 for 4 scoring three times for Triton and Tyson Blackford went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Houk (4-8) absorbed the loss for Adams Central, which finished 20-13, under first year coach Herb Bergman.

Triton earned its berth in the championship contest by way of its 1-0 semifinal victory over Madison Shawe. Adams Central took a 9-3 decision from Tecumseh in the other game.

In two state finals games, Triton’s defense did not allow a run and surrendered just four base hits, including its one-hit shutout of Madison Shawe in the semifinals.
