EIGHTH INNING HOME RUN DELIVERS STATE TITLE FOR NORWELL

It took extra innings to decide the Class AAA championship at Victory Field on Saturday afternoon, as Norwell defeated New Palestine 3-1 in eight innings.  It was only the fourth extra-inning game in IHSAA state championship game history and the first since 1980.

Though it was broad daylight on a sun-filled afternoon, catcher Jason Schortgen (11) ignited the fireworks in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run shot over the left-field wall with one out, sending the Knights crowd into a  frenzy and Kelly Weybright’s team to its first-ever IHSAA crown.

Jacob Ringenberg (12) had started off the final frame by grounding out to short.  Drew Dafforn (11) then worked pitcher Dustin Eck (12) for a walk.  Darren Dafforn (12) moved in to pinch run for Drew and came home on Schortgen’s blast.

New Palestine, under head coach Al Cooper, had broken on top early in the second game of the day, scoring in the top half of the first-inning, as Joey Hercamp (12) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Andy Zellers (12) followed with a single to left and was thrown out attempting to go to second on the throw back to the infield, with Hercamp moving to third.  Andrew Clark (9) then smashed a double to the 362’ mark in right center, chasing Hercamp home.

Norwell tied the game in the bottom of the third.  After a pair of uneventful groundouts to short, Ringenberg whistled a triple to right field and Drew Dafforn blooped a singled down the right field line, scoring Ringenberg with the tying run, before Schortgen, the eventual hero of the game, grounded out to end the inning.

Norwell finished the 2003 season 23-11.  New Palestine’s campaign came to a close at 27-8.
