1998 IHSAA Baseball Class 4A State Championship Game

PENN STORMS TO CLASS 4A STATE TITLE

Unranked Penn scored seven runs in the first inning and stormed to a 16-4 win over Jeffersonville for the IHSAA Class 4A state championship on Saturday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

It was the second baseball title for the Kingsmen, who finished 25-9 under coach Greg Dikos, and just the second trip out of the sectional. Penn also won it all in 1994. With the victory, Penn also becomes the first team to win a baseball and football state championship in the same year. Penn defeated Bloomington South last November in the Class 5A football championship game, 21-20.

Penn got to Jeffersonville starting pitcher Michael Treat for seven runs on seven hits and six RBI in the first inning. Ryan Cosner's double down the rightfield line which scored Brian Hazlewood and Drew Fizer made it 3-0 early on. Three batters later, Lucas Fry's single scored Jason Widmar, who reached on an infield single and moved to second when Joe Durski walked.

Bryan Hargett smacked a two-out double for Jeffersonville in the bottom half of the first inning and scored two batters later when Adam Treat singled him home to make it 7-1.

Penn tacked on three more in the second inning as Widmar and Durski both reached safely on errors. Lucas Fry's two-out homer to left centerfield made it 10-1.

The Kingsmen made it 14-1 in the fourth inning which was highlighted by Widmar's two-run blast to the leftfield corner that scored Cosner, who had lined an RBI triple just prior.

With the score 16-1, Jeffersonville added two in the fourth and one in the fifth for the final margin. Coached by Al Rabe, the unranked Red Devils finished 21-13 in their fourth appearance in the state finals and first since 1984. Jeffersonville has never won the championship.

The IHSAA Executive Committee selected Blake Gaugler of Penn High School as the recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Baseball. Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Penn High School in Gaugler's name.
