Madison captures

first baseball crown

Led by the record-setting pitching of senior Bryan Bullington and two triples from senior Chad Liter, Madison captured its first IHSAA baseball state title with a 10-0 triumph over Carroll (Fort Wayne) in the 1999 Class 3A championship.

Madison (31-2) broke open a 0-0 game in the top of the third inning when Liter led off with a triple and scored as senior Collin Schafer followed with another triple. The Cubs added two more runs in the inning when Bullington helped his cause by singling in Schafer and Chris Bass, who had walked.

The Cubs added six more runs in the sixth, sparked by Liter's three-run triple with no outs. Liter subsequently scored on a wild pitch, and two more runs came across after Carroll errors.

Bullington took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before senior Ryan Delagrange singled sharply to rightfield with one out. Bullington went the distance and struck out seven for his 15th victory of the season against no defeats. Bullington is the first player to pitch a complete game and hurl a one-hitter in a state championship game. There has never been a no-hitter.

It is the second IHSAA title overall for Madison. The other came in 1950 in boys basketball.

Carroll, also making its first appearance in the state finals, finished 20-14.
