Junior Bart Phariss of North Central (Indianapolis) won individual honors and Valparaiso ran to the team championship in the 52nd Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Cross Country State Finals on November 8, 1997 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
The state meet was conducted on the I.U. course for the first time under ideal conditions at 50 degrees, sunny skies and with good footing on the hilly layout.
Phariss ran to a seven-second triumph over junior Chad Andrews of Northfield in a winning time of 16:04.03. Junior Jeff Glant of Southport was third, followed by senior Matt Miller of DeKalb and senior Joey Byrne of Floyd Central. Phariss is the first athlete from his school to win the IHSAA Boys Cross Country state title.
Senior Trey Wiesjahn finished 20th overall in leading Valparaiso's runners. Other Vikings in the scoring were senior Ian Rock (51st individually), freshman Joe Dillabaugh (54th), senior Adam Nellessen (63rd), and senior Jeff Brown (70th).
It was the fifth title overall for Valparaiso, and the first since 1986. The Vikings were coached by Michael Prow.
Matt Stout, a senior at Lakeland High School who finished 14th in the race in 16:26.09, was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee to receive the Charles F. Maas Award for Mental Attitude in Boys Cross Country. Stout is the first Lakeland athlete in and sport to receive an IHSAA mental attitude award.
Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 check to Lakeland High School in Stout's name.
