Senior quarterback Andy Sahm called an audible at the line of scrimmage and dove over from one yard out for the winning touchdown on fourth down with 19 seconds left to cap a 21-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 9:11 and give Indianapolis Chatard a thrilling 27-24 victory over Andrean Saturday (Nov. 29) at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
THIRD STATE TITLE FOR THE TROJANS -- Saturday's Class 3A victory gave Indianapolis Chatard its third IHSAA state title with all three coming in football. The Trojans won the Class 2A crowns in 1983 and 1984. The championship season comes after the Trojans suffered tournament losses to the eventual state champion five straight seasons.
12th SCHOOL TO WIN FOOTBALL TITLE IN DIFFERENT CLASSES -- With its victory, Indianapolis Chatard earned the distinction of becoming the 12th IHSAA school to win a state title in two different classes. The Trojans won the Class 2A championships in 1983 and 1984. On Friday night, Jimtown became the 11th school to do so after winning the 2A crown. The Jimmies won the Class A title in 1991.
CHATARD'S DANIELS MOVES UP ALL-TIME STATE CHART -- Chatard's DuJuan Daniels finished the day with 30 carries for 137 yards and a touchdown. The senior running back moved to eighth on the Indiana all-time single season rushing chart totaling 2,516 yards. His one touchdown allowed him to move into a tie for 10th on the all-time single season scoring chart with 254 points.
ANDREAN'S FINN NAMED ESKEW AWARD WINNER -- Andrean's Robert (Bobby) Finn was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the winner of the Phil N. Eskew Award for Mental Attitude in Class 3A. Finn, the 59ers' senior quarterback, completed six of 11 passes for 78 yards. He ran 10 times for 25 yards with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. An A-honor roll student, Finn ranks in the top 25 percent of Andrean's senior class of 207 students. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Club and is the president of the Andrean Athletic Monogram Club. A three-sport athlete, Finn also competes in basketball and captains the 59ers' baseball team.
Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Finn's name to Andrean High School.
