CLASS 3A GAME NOTES

Chatard Back-to Back Championships

Indianapolis Chatard is one of 13 schools to have won back-to-back championships in football following its 1997 victory over Andrean. However, they are just the second school to win consecutive championships on two different ocassions. The Trojans previously had won two consecutive titles by winning Class 2A titles in 1983 and 1984. Ben Davis won Class 5A championships in 1987 and 1988 and again in 1990 and 1991.

Fourth Football Title for Trojans

Indianapolis Chatard won its fourth football state championship with its victory over NorthWood. The Trojans join Ben Davis, Franklin Central, Hobart, Penn and Roncalli as the only schools with four state championships. Sheridan's six titles and Carmel's five rank one-two on the IHSAA state charts.

NorthWood's Fourth Runner-Up Trophy

NorthWood carried home the state runner-up trophy for the fourth time in four trips to the state finals. The Panthers finished as the runner-up in 1980 (2A), 1986 (3A) and 1993 (3A). Among all-time runner-up finishes, Hobart leads with seven, while NorthWood joined Jasper with the second most on the list.

NorthWood's Greenlee Named Eskew Award Recipient

Brad Greenlee, a senior at NorthWood High School, was named the 1998 recipient of the Phil N. Eskew Award in Class 3A football by the IHSAA Executive Committee. Greenlee is a three-year football letterman for the Panthers and was a team captain this year while playing wide receiver and defensive back. He came into the championship game with 19 catches this season for 287 yards, along with 85 tackles and four interceptions. Greenlee also has lettered three years in track and one year in basketball. Academically, he ranks in the top 10 percent of his senior class and is a member of the National Honor Society. Greenlee plans to attend Purdue University. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to NorthWood High School in Greenlee's name. He is the fourth NorthWood football player to be honored, joining Kevin Mullet (1980, Class 2A), Phil Wilson (1986, Class 3A) and Ryan Hartman (1993, Class 3A).

CLASS 3A QUOTES

NorthWood Head Coach Rich Dotson

"Our defense looks better when your offense runs some clock and moves the ball. It takes a great effort to go against a great opponent."

"We felt we had a chance to do something no NorthWood team had done (win a State Championship). It was good to get the first score. But we had a crucial penalty that set us back when we got close and that was one of the differences. We couldn't control them in the second half. They had good field position and they scored there at the end."

"They had a guy shadowing Huber. He's done a lot for us this year and that showed a lot of respect for him when they did that. Their pass rush hurt us a lot, especially in the third quarter."

"I'm proud of Brad (Greenlee) and they way he's played for us. It (Mental Attitude Award) is something we've been able to win down here."

NorthWood Wide Receiver Brad Greenlee

"It's a great honor. I really respect the people who have won it in the past."

NorthWood Wide Receiver Joe Abel

"We've played for our community. It's not a burden, not winning State."

Indianapolis Chatard Head Coach Craig Barr

"We talked all week going into the game about having poise and we were able to play with that during the game."

"NorthWood is a good team. That's the fewest points we've scored in the first half since our second ballgame. In the second half, we started to control the line of scrimmage and we got a couple of good plays from (Justin) Henry."

"It seemed like we give up a score early but then we have been able to shut them down. Our defense made the difference."

"We felt Huber was an emotional leader of their team. We've done a good job of shutting down good tailbacks."

"We've made adjustments with players all season. Each time we've done that, we've gotten better. We started 1-2, now we've won 12 games in a row."

"We're not the most talented, but it's the most hard working team."

Commenting on a winning tradition, "The effort that each player makes, the discipline and parental support and work ethic is what I attribute to our success."

"On offense when we get in trouble we run to the weak side behind (Richard) Bell, (John) Jackson and (Charlie) Vannice."

"For the seniors, this is the sixth time we've played in the Dome, so we're not in awe when we play here."
