Davidge, Mishawaka Marian
grab first-round leads
Robert Davidge of Culver Military birdied three of his last six holes to fire a four-under-par 35-33-68 and take the first-round lead in the 65th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals.
Mishawaka Marian, led by the tandem of sophomore Cole Isban (69) and junior Daniel Klauer (70), holds a one-stroke lead in the team competition at 294. The Knights are followed by Zionsville at 295 and Culver Military at 299. Mishawaka Marian nearly matched the team record for 18 holes set by Anderson in 1972 at Old Oakland with a 293.
Defending state champion Evansville North stands ninth at 306. The team cut came at 314. Sixteen of the original 21 teams survived the cut.
Davidge, a senior who tied for 11th individually in 2000, was one stroke shy of tying the tournament record set by Fuzzy Zoeller of New Albany in 1970 at Old Oakland Golf Club in Indianapolis. Davidge started on the 10th hole and scored the first of his four birdies with a 2 on No. 16, his seventh hole.
Davidge was one of nine players to break par. Isban was joined at 69 by Steve Lowe of LaPorte. Besides Klauer, Dan Mattingly of Indianapolis Cathedral and Tad Sacheck of Zionsville were at 70.
Four other players have shot a 68 in IHSAA state finals competition, the last time by Trent Tormoehlen of Seymour in the first round of the 1998 state finals at Prestwick Country Club.
The Legends of Indiana is serving as the host site of the IHSAA State Finals for the first time. Recent host sites were Prestwick Country Club in Avon (1987-2000) and Old Oakland (1970-1986).
