RICHMOND WINS SECOND STRAIGHT BOYS GOLF TITLE

Richmond successfully defended its state championship June 19 by shooting a team score of 616 to win the 61st Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Championships at Prestwick Country Club in Avon by eight strokes over Bloomington South.

The No. 2-ranked Red Devils were led by senior Joey Wuertemberger, who toured the front nine in two-under-par 34 and finished with a 72 to go with his first-round 76 for a 148. With his second round 72, Wuertemberger was the only player to match par on the 6,600-yard course. Scores went up in the second round amid hot and windy conditions. Richmond’s 311 was the best team score in the second round by three strokes.

Other individual scores for Richmond were senior David Moehring 75-77-152, sophomore Chris Melling 77-80-157, sophomore Mark Nottingham 77-87-164 and sophomore Justin Cross 80-82-162.

Martinsville finished third at 632, followed by East Noble and Andrean at 635. First-round leader Zionsville, which opened the day with a two-stroke edge over Richmond, had a tough second round. Only one player was able to break 80 as the Eagles finished sixth at 637.

It was the third IHSAA Boys Golf state championship in five years for Richmond, which also won titles in 1941, 1993 and 1996. Richmond has won seven IHSAA state championships in all sports, with five coming in the 1990s.

Jon Oliver, a junior at Huntington North, earned medalist honors by shooting a 75 to finish at 146 and two strokes ahead of three players at 148. Oliver was the first-round leader by one stroke with a 71. Tying for second were junior Noah Place of Jasper, senior Jeff Walkey of Lafayette Jefferson and senior Joey Wuertemberger of Richmond.
