First-Round Results, June 16
Marion, Noblesville share first-round lead at 309
Defending champion Noblesville and Marion posted team totals of 309 to share the first-round lead in the 63rd Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Golf State Finals.
The 6,750-yard course played tough from the outset with a brisk breeze out of the north. In the afternoon, the wind markedly increased and scores rose significantly on the back nine.
Senior Jeff Chapman, who finished seventh individually in the 1998 state finals, led Noblesville with a 75. Todd Chin paced Marion with a wild 74 that culminated with an eagle on the par-five 18th hole with a 25-foot putt after hitting the elevated green from 215 yards out with a 3-iron. Chin also had four birdies and three double bogeys.
Noblesville was ranked No. 2 in the final coaches association poll of the season issued prior to the start of tournament play. Marion was ranked sixth. Top-ranked Center Grove shot a 321 and goes into the final day in eighth place. The top nine teams and ties, plus any team within 20 strokes of the lead qualified for the second round on Thursday. Only six teams in the original 21-team field failed to make the cut that came at 329.
Individually, Herbie Champlin, a freshman from Culver Military, took the early lead with a one-over-par 73. That score held for most of the day until sophomores Chad Cooper of Lafayette Jefferson and Jeff Overton of Evansville North matched it late in the round. For individuals from a non-advancing team, the top nine players and ties, plus any player within six strokes of the individual leader, qualified for the second round.
