IHSAA Boys Soccer
1996-97 State Finals in Review
North Central of Indianapolis successfully defended its title by defeating South Bend St. Joseph's and Fort Wayne Canterbury November 2, 1996 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis to capture the Third Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Championships.
Ranked No. 3 going into the tournament in the state coaches association poll, North Central finished 18-3-1 by defeating South Bend St. Joseph's 3-0 in the semifinals and Fort Wayne Canterbury 6-1 in the state championship match. As in the previous two years, the Panthers were coached to the state title by Jerry Little.
Senior forward Kei Tennyson scored three goals in his final high school match, and classmate Matt Fundenberger scored twice. The pair set the tone early in the match when Tennyson lofted an accurate cross from the left corner that Fundenberger headed into the near side of the goal at 35:22.
Fundenberger also had scored two goals in the semifinals match against South Bend St. Joseph's, and finished the season with 30. Tennyson tallied four goals for the day to finish the season with 22.
Fort Wayne Canterbury, which reached the IHSAA state finals for the first time in any sport, advanced to the state championship match with a 2-0 triumph over Washington in the semifinals.
Zachary Schaub of Washington High School was chosen by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the 1996 recipient of the C. Eugene Cato Award for Mental Attitude in Boys Soccer. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Schaub's name to Washington High School.
A record total of 203 schools and 4,553 athletes
began competition at the sectional level.
