Penn blanks Castle 3-0

for first IHSAA soccer title

Penn scored a pair of first half goals and went on to a 3-0 victory over Castle in the championship match of the Sixth Annual IHSAA Boys Soccer State Finals at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis.

Coached by Tony Bauman, the Kingsmen scored two goals just three minutes apart in the first half of the match. That's all they would need to claim their first IHSAA boys soccer state championship. It was the school's ninth IHSAA title overall, with all but one (football, 1983) coming in the 1990s. Both teams were making their first appearance in the state finals.

Penn (20-1-2) opened the scoring with Michael Erickson's third goal of the day 13 minutes into the game. Erickson, who finished the year with a team-high 24 goals, scored twice in Penn's 4-1 victory over Noblesville in the semifinals. Three minutes later, Matthew Abbott knocked home the second goal on an assist from Ryan Marques with 23:10 remaining in the opening half.

Marques closed out the scoring by adding a penalty kick goal with 3:28 remaining in the game. The shutout was Penn's fourth in seven state tournament games and 12th of the year.

Castle finished 17-5-1.

Matthew Abbott named Mental Attitude Award recipient

Matthew Abbott of Penn High School was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the recipient of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award.

Serving as team captain of the state champion Kingsmen, Abbott gave Penn a 2-0 lead with a first-half goal. He was also named All-Northern Indiana Conference this season.

Academically, Abbott ranks first in his senior class of 686 students with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and was a 1998 Academic All-State selection. He has made the school's honor roll each semester of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.

He is undecided on his college choice, but plans to study biology.

The award, named after the IHSAA's fifth commissioner, is presented annually to the senior who best demonstrates excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in the boys soccer state tournament. Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Penn High School in Abbott's name.
