2002-03 IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Tournament Series

State Finals Summary

Carmel Rolls To Third Consecutive Swimming & Diving Title

Reeling off a record number of points and the widest margin of victory ever in the state meet, the Carmel boys swimming and diving team rolled to its third consecutive state championship at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Saturday, March 1, 2003.

Carmel scored 369 points, beating their own record of 299 set last year and outdistanced second place South Bend Riley by 226 points, which finished with 143. The previous widest margin of victory had been 150 points back in 1994 also set by Carmel. Placing third in this year’s meet was Homestead with 131 points followed by Harrison (West Lafayette) with 128 and Yorktown in fifth with 127.5.

The top-ranked Greyhounds, coached by Ken Stopkotte, won half of the events -- three individuals and all three relays – for their 10th state championship overall and gave the school a sweep of the sports’ state championships for the third year in a row as well. The Carmel girls, also coached by Stopkotte, won the state title two weeks ago – their 17th in a row.

Carmel jumped out of the gate immediately and never looked back winning the 200 medley relay for the meet’s first 40 points. Grant Wieczorek, Eric Johnson, Brandon Rector and Jason Cousins turned in the winning time of 1:33.65. Wieczorek, a junior, then turned around to win the very next event, the 200 freestyle in 1:39.01.

Wieczorek would add his third and fourth state championship medals of the day by winning the 100 butterfly and teaming to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Sophomore Chris Belcher captured the other individual title for Carmel in the 100 freestyle completing the course in :46.27.

A perfect example of Carmel’s depth, the key to many state championship teams over the years, was the fact they had three individuals place in the championship heat of the 200 individual medley. Mark Enoch, Eric Johnson and Chip Bartels finished second, third and sixth overall to amass 46 points in that event alone, while each relay victory was worth 40 points each.

No records were set in the state meet this year but other good stories were evident.

Western senior Ted Brown finished first in a pair of events winning the 200 individual medley in 1:51.92 and the 500 freestyle in 4:35.97 for the first state championships of his career. He finished second in the 500 free one year ago.

Also of note was the performance of senior Corey Cole of Indianapolis Arsenal Technical in one meter diving. Cole scored 466.55 points in his 11 dives to win the competition and become the first swimmer from his school to win a title at this meet and the first from an Indianapolis Public School since 1956. The last diving state champion to represent an IPS school was in 1929, two years before the IHSAA officially began sponsoring the state tournament series.

Junior Benedict Hesen of Jeffersonville, the only returning state champion in an individual event, successfully defended his title in the 100 backstroke. Hesen started in lane six after registering the fourth best time in Friday’s prelims but beat the competition to the wall in :49.75, just .33 shy of the meet record.

And finally, following a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke a year ago, Hamilton Southeastern senior Daniel Walter returned to win it all this time around in :56.74 and Yorktown senior Kyle Ruth took top honors in the 50 freestyle in :20.67. Ruth is the first swimmer from his school to win a state swimming championship.

Following the state meet, Ted Brown of Western High School was named winner of the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Brown won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle to win the first championship medals of his high school career and, with the award, is the first Western High School student athlete in any sport to win a mental attitude award.

The award, named in honor of the former IHSAA Assistant Commissioner who served the association from 1961-73, is awarded annually to a senior who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in the state meet.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the proud corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Western High School in the name of Brown.

A total of 2,714 athletes from 217 schools began competition at the sectional level.
