CARMEL WINS BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING TITLE; TWO RECORDS FALL

Carmel's superior depth proved to be the difference as the Greyhounds captured their eighth consecutive title in the 60th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Swimming and Diving Championships February 28-March 1, 1997 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Coached by Tony Young, the Greyhounds accumulated 208.50 points to take top honors. Columbus North finished second with 193.50 points, followed by Munster (135), West Lafayette (124) and Homestead (110).

Two meet records went by the wayside, including the 200 freestyle as senior Nick Arzner of Crawfordsville won the event for the third consecutive year. His 1:38.06 clocking in the finals broke the 1:38.50 mark he had set in the preliminary competition. Arzner, the meet's only double winner, earned his second 1997 title when he edged defending state champion Dan Barnes of West Lafayette in the 100 freestyle with a winning time of :44.91.

The other meet record fell when Anderson's John Retrum successfully defended his state title in the 500 freestyle. Retrum clocked a 4:29.96 to eclipse the mark of 4:29.46 set in 1988 by Todd Griner of Anderson.

Besides Arzner and Retrum, three other athletes won their second straight state championship. Justin Hoggatt of Homestead captured the 50 freestyle in 20.70, Jon Karr of Columbus North took the 100 backstroke in 49.96 and Devin Meece of East Central won the 100 breaststroke in 56.62.

Dan Barnes of West Lafayette High School was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the 1997 recipient of the Herman F. Keller Award for Mental Attitude in Boys Swimming and Diving. Barnes finished second in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. He was the 100 freestyle champion in 1996. Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to West Lafayette High School in the name of Barnes.

A total of 201 schools and 2,703 athletes began competition at the sectional level.
