CARMEL CAPTURES BOYS TEAM TENNIS TITLE

The Carmel Greyhounds made it look easy on Saturday, October 18, 2003, as they captured their 4th IHSAA Boys Team Tennis State Championship at North Central (Indpls.) High School, by defeating West Lafayette, 4-1, on a beautiful, sunny day, with the temperature hovering in the 70s.

Carmel began the season as the No. 2 ranked team in the state behind Park Tudor, but quickly moved into the top spot and knocked off the Panthers 4-1 in the North Central (Indpls.) Semi-State to advance to the finals.  The Greyhounds made short work of Valparaiso in the morning session, winning 5-0, losing only eight games in the process.

In the afternoon session, it was much of the same.  The Greyhounds lost only one match all day, that a No. 1 Singles thriller to Tony Adeyemi of West Lafayette, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the championship round of action.  The combined record of the players who represented Carmel in the state finals was a remarkable 106-7.

Carmel finished the season at 21-0 under head coach Mike Bostic.  Their previous championships had come in 1980, 1981 and 1987, all under head coach Lee Lonzo.  They had claimed state runner-up honors in 1991.

STEVEN LEE OF WEST LAFAYETTE WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD

Senior Steven Lee of West Lafayette High School was named winner of the Boys Tennis Mental Attitude Award for 2003.  The recipient of this award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in tennis.

Steven, a four-year letter winner, was named All-Hoosier Conference during each of those four years at West Lafayette.  He was this season’s co-captain.  He is also a member of the varsity basketball team

Academically, Steven is an honors student, with a nearly perfect grade point average.  He will complete requirements for the Indiana Honors Diploma and has always challenged himself with accelerated and advanced placement courses.

Outside the classroom, he participates in the high school orchestra, Wabash Valley Youth Sinfonia, Junior Musical, ISSMA music competitions and in private violin lesions.  He was elected president of the Student Council and is serving as an officer in several other school groups.

Steven’s brother, Lawrence, also a former member of the Red Devils, captured the Mental Attitude Award in tennis in 2001.

Steven combined with his younger brother Anthony, a junior, to capture a 6-1, 6-3 win over Floyd Central in the morning match.  They then lost a hard-fought showdown with Carmel for the No. 1 Doubles championship, losing 7-5, 6-3.

Steven is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Chun Sing Lee of West Lafayette.

Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000.00 scholarship check to West Lafayette High School in the name Steven Lee.
