2004 IHSAA BOYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT

TEAM STATE FINALS

CARMEL CLAIMS BOYS TEAM TENNIS TITLE NO.5

Despite the cold, windy, raw conditions on the North Central (Indpls.) High School courts, the Carmel boys tennis team warmed to the occasion, blowing away Delta and Penn to claim the 2004 team tennis title, their second consecutive title and fifth overall for the Greyhounds (1980-81-87-03-04), who went 42-0 over the past two seasons.

The Greyhounds (21-0) defeated Delta (26-1) in the morning semi-final round, 4-1.  Delta’s only win coming in #1 doubles.  Meanwhile, in the morning session, Penn (16-1) was defeating Terre Haute North (17-4) by the same score, as the Patriots dropped only one match, #3 singles.

That set up the title confrontation, with the Greyhounds rolling over the Kingsmen, 5-0, in straight sets in each match.  Carmel was challenged in only one match in the afternoon’s play, a thrilling 7-6 (7-3) win in the first set for Ethan Jaffee (12) of Carmel over Chris Jordan (11) of Penn.

It was the 81st state championship overall for Carmel High School, the state’s all-time leader.
