NORTH CENTRAL, PARK TUDOR PLAYERS WIN STATE TENNIS TITLES

Troy Hahn of Indianapolis North Central and the Park Tudor doubles team of Wade Knall and Brandon Gill capped their respective seasons with a championship as the IHSAA Boys Tennis Singles and Doubles State Finals were contested at Racquets Four Sports Center in Indianapolis on Saturday.

Hahn rallied after losing the opening set to defeat Kevin Burnett of Center Grove, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to win the 19th annual singles tournament. The victory capped a perfect season for the North Central junior, who finished 34-0. He reached the final match by ousting South Bend St. Joseph's Chris Varga, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals earlier in the day. Burnett, who helped Center Grove to a state runnerup finish in the 1997 team tournament, completed his senior year 25-3 after beating Brad Rhodes of Mooresville, 6-1, 6-2, for a spot in the final.

Hahn became the fourth North Central player to win the state singles championship joining David McCallum (1984 and 1985), Michael Hopkinson (1989) and Adam Schumacher (1995).

In doubles action, the top seeded team of Knall and Gill encountered little resistance in their quest for the championship after receiving a first round bye through Friday's action. The pair took a straight set decision from Nick Bishop and Nicholas Hindsley of Mishawaka Marian in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-3, and won the 9th annual doubles title with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Goshen's David Harms and Matt Shively. Harms and Shively earned their way into the final with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Rushville's Kyle South and Brad Hood. Knall and Gill ran their record to 25-1 for the year, while Harms and Shively ended 26-2.

Fresh off helping their team to its third straight state title one week ago, Knall, a senior, and Gill, a sophomore, became the second Park Tudor duo to wear the state doubles crown. They join Jamie Knall and John Pearson who won in 1996.

In the consolation rounds, Varga (30-2), who finished as the runnerup in this event last year, defeated Rhodes (24-2), 6-2, 6-1, for third place in singles. In doubles, Bishop and Hindsley (21-2) survived a second set tiebreaker and went on to win, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, over South and Hood (22-3).
