KYLE SWEENEY OF PORTAGE HIGH SCHOOL

NAMED ROBERT S. HINSHAW MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER

 

­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Kyle Sweeney of Portage High School has been named recipient of the 2003 IHSAA Boys Track and Field Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award, presented annually to an outstanding senior participant in the boys track and field state finals.  The recipient of the award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in the sport.

 

A two-time state finalist in the 110 and 300 Meter Hurdles, he finished third and 10th respectively in today’s state meet. Kyle is a two-time Duneland Conference champion, two-time Portage Track and Field team MVP and team captain.  He was a four year letter winner in soccer, along with being a two-time team captain and team MVP, as well as earning all-conference, area and district honors.

 

Academically, Kyle ranks fourth in his senior class of 444, with a GPA of 4.25 out of a possible 4.0.  He is a member of the National Honor Society, a National Merit finalist and has been named Academic All-State.  He will be graduating with two languages, one of the school’s highest math courses, and advanced/honors English.  He is a Portage High School Student Council class representative and was the school’s Natural Helpers Coordinator of the PHS leadership conference.  He has accepted a full academic scholarship to Michigan State University, where he will major in Microbiology.

 

He has been an active volunteer in the Soup Kitchen Mission, and also gave of his time as a PHS after-school math tutor and elementary school soccer camp instructor.

 

Kyle is the son of Cora and Douglas Sweeney of Portage, Indiana.

 

Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner of all IHSAA state tournaments, presented a check for $1,000 to Portage High School in the name of Kyle Sweeney.
