LAWRENCE NORTH REPEATS
AS STATE WRESTLING CHAMPION
Lawrence North won nine of 14 matches to win the team
wrestling championship at the 10th Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State
Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.
Coached by Brett Crousore, Lawrence
North repeated as Indianas best wrestling team for the
second straight season, defeating Portage, 34-21, in the first round,
Evansville Mater Dei, 36-23, in the semis and Avon, 48-17, for the title to finish
29-0. They finished 29-1 during last years championship campaign.
It was the 47th consecutive dual meet victory for
the Wildcats and adds another big trophy to their display case alongside those
from 1992, 1993 and 2004.
By blind draw, all matches during the entire day started
with the 160 pound class and wound their way through the lineup.
In the finals, Kris Boyden of Avon
had just earned an 8-3 decision over Lawrence Norths Josh Leppink
at 112 pounds to give the Orioles a 13-12 advantage and it appeared like they
might challenge the defending champs, but then Lawrence North took control. The
Wildcats got six straight pins from 119 to 145 pounds to wrap up the title. Senior
Maurice Gunn pinned his heavyweight opponent and was followed by classmates
Tyler Pino at 119, David Gans
at 125, Michael Albert at 130, Reece Humphrey at 135, Zach Aspling
at 140 and Thomas Johnson at 145, each of whom registered a fall as well. Humphrey
completed his second straight perfect season at 51-0, a week after winning his
third straight individual state title. Humphrey wrestled up in the 135 pound
class in all three matches after winning the 130 pound state championship a
week ago.
Avon, under the guidance of head coach Jared Williams, suffered
its first dual loss since falling to Warren Central back on Dec. 4 and had won
20 straight matches to finish 24-2. The Orioles made it all the way to the
title round in their very first trip to the state finals and avenged their earlier
loss to the Warriors by eliminating them in the first round, 31-28. The defeated Columbia City in the semis, 33-18. Avons 215 pound state champ Lynn Panko won all three of his matches to finish his senior
season 49-0.
Evansville Mater Deis Matt
Coughlin won both his matches by fall to finish the year 44-0 after winning two
consecutive state titles at 152 pounds.
