10 UNBEATENS HEADLINE

LIST OF 1998 STATE CHAMPS

 

Fourteen state champions were crowned February 21 at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis as the 60th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Finals concluded before a crowd of 10,178.

 

The champions list included three second-time state champions, a three-time state champion and 10 athletes who are unbeaten this season.

 

Leading the way was senior Steven Bradley of Beech Grove who won his third straight state championship. Bradley closed his career with a 158-4 record by taking the 125-pound title in a 9-4 decision over sophomore William Campbell of Warren Central.

 

Anton Talamantes of Floyd Central, the 215-pound champ in 1997, came back to capture the 189-pound title with a pin in 5:39 over Brandon Sisson of Floyd Central.

 

The other repeat champion was Joshua Hardy of Princeton, who successfully defended his 171-pound title with a 7-4 decision over John Comeau of South Bend Washington.

 

Greg Schaefer of Evansville Mater Dei, who captured the 100-pound crown as a freshman in 1995, closed his high school career in championship fashion by winning the 199-pound title with a 7-2 decision over senior Shaun Richardson of Perry Meridian. Schaefer claimed his second title with a 45-0 season record.

 

John Leavell of Decatur Central joined his brothers, James and Tim, as a state wrestling champion by outlasting Dustin Davis of Martinsville to claim a 6-3 overtime decision in the 130-pound class. Leavell, a senior who also won his semifinals match in overtime, closed the season 36-1. James Leavell won the 140-pound title in 1994 and the 151-pound title in 1995. Tim was the 189-pound champ in 1993.

 

D.J. Radnovich of Gibson Southern completed a perfect senior season by pinning his fourth straight state finals opponent in the 215-pound class. Radnovich claimed a 1:10 fall over John Berry to finish 47-0. Radnovich pinned 46 of 47 opponents this season.

 

Saturday night's final crowd of 10,178 brought the two-day total to 35,732.

 

Erik LeBeau, a senior at Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne, was named the 1998 recipient of the Ward E. Brown Award for Mental Attitude in the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals. The award is named after Ward E. Brown, the fourth commissioner of the IHSAA.

 

LeBeau, who finished as the runner-up in the 152-pound weight class, finished his career with 103 victories. He was 43-1 this season. In addition to reaching the state finals in 1998, he won three sectional wrestling titles and two regional titles. Also a standout in soccer, he was a four-year varsity performer and was the team's most valuable player as a senior while also serving as captain.

 

Academically, he holds a 3.38 grade point average and intends to study pre-medicine at Indiana University or Ball State University. He has been an active leader in a number of extracurricular activities at Concordia Lutheran High School and in church activities.

Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 check in LeBeau's named to Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran High School.
