2000 IHSAA GIRLS GOLF STATE FINALS

September 29-30, 2000

The Legends of Indiana Golf Course, Franklin

Martinsville comes from behind

to win sixth straight title

Martinsville rallied from a six-stroke deficit in the final round to win its sixth consecutive team title going away in the 28th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals at Legends of Indiana in Franklin. The Artesians finished at 662, followed by first-round leader Noblesville at 678 and Center Grove at 681.

It was the ninth title in the last 10 years for the Artesians, all under the direction of coach Sharon Most. Juniors Stephanie Turner and Ashlie Rose led the way for Martinsville. Both finished at 160, with Rose shooting a 74 to post Saturday’s best round. Also in the lineup for the balanced Artesians were junior Carmen Bodine (86-82-168), junior Donya Stipcak (89-86-175) and sophomore Sarah Bires (91-85-176).

The challenging par-72 course played at 5,650 yards in breezy and soft conditions for the second round under sunny skies.

Lauren Gant of Fort Wayne Dwenger captured individual medalist honors with a final-round 77 to finish at six-over-par 150. She had held a two-stroke lead after the first round. A senior, Gant finished third in the 1999 state finals and fourth in 1998. After a bogey on No. 8 and a double bogey on No. 9, Gant rallied down the stretch. She played the final six holes in even par, highlighted by a birdie on No. 15.

Gant joined her father, Gary Gant, as the first parent-child combination to win IHSAA golf state titles. Gary Gant was the 1970 IHSAA Boys Golf champion while playing for North Central of Indianapolis. Gant’s three-under-par 139 at Old Oakland in Indianapolis in the first year of 36-hole state championship play remains the boys state finals record.

Caroline Haase of Culver Academy took second individually at 76-77-153, followed by Sally Shonk of Noblesville at 75-79-154.

Sarah Sparks of East Noble

named Mental Attitude Award recipient

Sarah Sparks of East Noble, who shot a 79-83-162 to finish ninth individually, was named the 2000 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Girls Golf by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Sparks was a four-year participant in golf. She was the sectional medalist as a sophomore and the regional medalist as a senior. She also was a varsity letter winner in basketball as a sophomore and junior.

Academically, she ranks seventh in a class of 242 students. She is a member of the National Honor Society, serves as editor of the school newspaper and is a member of the student council.

Her college choice has yet to be made, but she plans to major in journalism.

Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 check to East Noble High School in the name of Sparks.
