Legends of Indiana will be new

home of IHSAA golf state finals

The Legends of Indiana, a highly regarded 27-hole public facility in Franklin, has been awarded a five-year contract to host the IHSAA Girls Golf and Boys Golf State Finals.

The partnership will begin with the 28th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals Sept. 29 and 30, 2000 and continue through the 2005 IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals.

"We are pleased to join in a new partnership that will bring our student athletes to one of the state’s best golf facilities for the state finals," said Commissioner Blake Ress. "We’re excited about the opportunities at the Legends of Indiana."

The Legends of Indiana is located 20 miles south of downtown Indianapolis. It is three miles from the I-65 interchange at Indiana 44, on the northeastside of Franklin. The course is adjacent to the headquarters of the Indiana Golf Association.

Designed by Jim Fazio and opened in 1992, the Legends of Indiana already has hosted three United States Golf Association qualifier and several of Indiana’s major golf championships. That includes both the men’s and women’s state amateur tournaments and the Indiana PGA among the 20 Indiana Golf Association (amateur) and the Indiana Section PGA (professional) events. The Legends of Indiana also is the annual site of two major men’s and women’s college tournaments. The course has previously hosted IHSAA sectional and regional championships for girls and boys.

In addition to its 27 holes of championship golf, the Legends of Indiana also has The Niblick, a sporty 18-hole par-three course, and a superior practice facility that includes the largest grass hitting area in Indiana. Presently, the Indiana Golf Foundation is constructing a $2.5 million golf academy on the property.

"We’re proud of the facility and really feel that golf in Indiana is centered in Franklin," said Ted Bishop, director of golf at the Legends of Indiana. "This will be a positive thing for our community and we look forward to working with the IHSAA as the host of its state championship tournaments."

Plans call for the IHSAA state finals tournaments to be played on the Middle Nine and the Road Nine. With four sets of tees, the layout can play from 5,244 yards to 7,044 yards. That rotation includes 11 holes where water comes into play along with a significant number of bunkers.

The Legends of Indiana will be the fourth site for the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals and the sixth site for the IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals.
