MARTINSVILLE GRABS THREE-STROKE EDGE IN GIRLS GOLF STATE FINALS

Top-ranked and defending state champion Martinsville put itself in solid contention for its fifth state championship in six years by grabbing a three-stroke lead over Northwestern Saturday in the first round of the 24th annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals at Prestwick Country Club in Avon.

Those two teams and seven others will return next Saturday (Oct. 12) for the final 18-hole round. Martinsville scored a 314 on the par 71, 5,250-yard course. Playing in pleasant conditions with little wind, Prestwick played easier than usual. Twenty 20 players in the 108-girl field finished at 80 or better.

Northwestern, ranked second in the coaches association poll, came in at 317. The Tigers were followed by Lafayette Jefferson (328), Franklin (336), Fort Wayne Dwenger (337) and Fort Wayne Snider (340). The low nine teams and ties, and any teams within 20 strokes of the lead, were eligible to move on to second-round competition.

Defending individual state champion Kathryn (Katy) Wilkinson of South Bend Clay fired a record-tying 69 to open a strong title defense. The senior opened with a 37 on the front nine and finished with a blazing three-under-par 32 on the back nine with three birdies. She also missed two other short birdie opportunities on the 17th and 18th holes. Wilkinson also shot a 69 in the 1995 opening round to share the state finals records with Jennifer Gray of Martinsville, who shot a 69 in the second round of the 1993 state finals.

Wilkinson will bid to join Gray (1992, 1993), Carmel’s Martha Foyer (1979, 1980, 1981) and Castle’s Suzanne Noblett (1982, 1984) as a multiple state champion.

Chasing Wilkinson will be senior Kasey Gant of Fort Wayne Dwenger, who came in at even-par 71. Right behind are freshman Leigh Anne Hardin of Martinsville and senior Mary Klein of Northwestern at 72.

Wilkinson was one of 10 players who advanced to the second round as an individual qualifier. The state finals format for individual qualifiers calls for the low nine scores and ties, along with any players within six strokes of the lead, to qualify for the second round.
