MARTINSVILLE WINS IHSAA GIRLS GOLF STATE TITLE

Shooting a tournament-record  640, Martinsville successfully won the IHSAA Girls Golf state championship for the fifth time in six years today at the Prestwick Country Club in Avon with a nine-stroke margin over runner-up Northwestern.

Martinsville’s total easily eclipsed the previous record of 683 shot by Martinsville on its way to the 1992 state championship. Since the tournament became a 36-hole event in 1991, seven of the top 10 all-time team scores were shot by the 1996 field.

Saturday’s second-round conditions were more challenging than in last week’s opening round. Although operating under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s, a brisk southwesterly wind helped to push scores higher from the first round.

Martinsville was led by freshman Leigh Anne Hardin, who recovered from a double bogey on her first hole to shoot an even-par 36 on the front nine and finished with a six-over-par 77. Hardin’s 36-hole score of 149, placed her second in the individual field. Other 36-hole scores for Martinsville, which didn’t have a senior in the lineup included a 155 by sophomore Erin Roe, a 166 from freshman Jamie Hovious, a 170 from junior Kristen Bodine, and a 181 from sophomore Heather Rose.

Kathryn (Katy) Wilkinson of South Bend Clay won her second consecutive individual title with a two-over-par 73 to finish the 36-hole competition at a record 142. That total eclipsed the previous record of 145 that Wilkinson shared with Jennifer Gray of Martinsville. Wilkinson had shot a 145 in winning the 1995 title by seven strokes over Amber Amstutz of Leo. Gray’s effort came in the 1993 state finals.

Wilkinson joined Martha Foyer of Carmel (1979, 1980, 1981) Jennifer Gray of Martinsville (1992, 1993) and Suzanne Noblett of Castle (1982, 1984) as the only multiple state champions in the tournament’s 24-year tournament history. Wilkinson also joined her brother, Jeremy Wilkinson, as a two-time IHSAA champion. Jeremy Wilkinson, now a freshman golfer at Louisiana State, was the IHSAA boys state champion in 1994 and 1995.

Andrea Quandt, a senior at Northwestern High School, was named the 1996 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in girls golf. Quandt, who ranks third academically in her senior class, shot a 76-78-154 to place fifth among individuals. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of all IHSAA tournaments, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Northwestern High School in Quandt’s name. iHiHi
