PENN RUNS AWAY WITH TEAM TITLE, GAUCK REPEATS AS MEDALIST
The Penn Kingsmen
had a record day in repeating as team champions and North Decatur’s Angela Gauck won her second consecutive individual crown in the 33rd
Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in
Franklin on Saturday.
Penn took a 13-stroke lead
into Saturday’s final round and pulled away with a 301 for a two-day total of
614 to easily outdistance runner-up Noblesville with 646. Both Penn’s 18-hole
and 36-hole marks were state finals records. Martinsville finished third (655),
Valparaiso was fourth (665) and DeKalb was fifth
(670).
The Kingsmen
won their third state title in four years under coach
Jim Garrett and had three players finish among the top nine individuals with
all firing scores of 154 or better. Senior Julia Potter led the way finishing
fifth overall at 148. Last year’s state runner-up, Potter started the day tied
for 24th after a first round 80. She turned in a state
finals record-tying 68 today, including a 31 on the front nine. Her
record round tied
Until Saturday’s
performance, Penn’s first round 313 tied the fourth-best mark in the girls golf state finals and was the best round since the
state meet moved to this course in 2000.
Gauck started the final round in fourth place but emerged
from a pack of 11 golfers who entered the day within six strokes of the lead to
win her second consecutive state title with a 73-70-143 to finish at one under.
She became the first repeat medalist since Hardin won three straight
championships from 1997-99. Gauck birdied four holes in a seven-hole stretch
between the ninth and 15th holes and shot par on the other three.
She also shot two-under on the course’s four par-5 holes.
Muncie Central senior
Michelle Morgan and Evansville Memorial junior Ellen Mueller tied for second
with identical scores of 71-73-144. Mishawaka Marian senior Britt Knutson was
fourth at 72-73-145.
Junior Emily Johnson of
Warsaw, who won state medalist honors in 2003, finished tied for ninth
(77-77-154).
Both days of the tournament
were contested under ideal golfing conditions on the par-72, 5,697 yards with
sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s.
