54 TEAMS QUALIFY FOR REGIONAL COMPETITION

A field of 54 teams, led by defending state champion and top-ranked Martinsville, has qualified for the regional round of the 25th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament. Regional play will be conducted at six sites Saturday (Sept. 27).

Martinsville and No. 2-ranked Franklin set the sectional pace across the state with team scores of 326. Martinsville won the Bloomington North Sectional at Cascades Golf Course by 20 strokes over Bloomington North, while Franklin captured the Franklin Sectional at the Legends of Indiana by 23 strokes over Columbus North. Martinsville advanced to the Bedford North Lawrence Regional, while Franklin will host the Franklin Regional at the Legends of Indiana.

Martinsville was led by senior Kristen Bodine's 78. The Artesians played without sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin, the state runner-up in 1996. Hardin is playing in the Junior Ryder Cup matches this week in Spain and also will not play in the regional.

Individually, the state's top sectional score was posted by Ashley Prange of Harrison (West Lafayette) with a three-under-par 72 in winning the Lafayette Jefferson Sectional at Lafayette Municipal G.C. Three of the four lowest sectional scores in the state were shot at Lafayette, with Ashley Lowery of Harrison (West Lafayette) and Mary Lidester of Lafayette Jefferson coming in at 75 behind Prange. Krista Dillman of Richmond had the state's second-lowest score with a 74 in winning the Richmond Sectional at Highland Lake G.C.

The top three teams in each of the six regionals will advance to the 1997 IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals Oct. 4 at Prestwick Country Club in Avon. Also qualifying for the state finals will be the top three individuals from non-advancing teams at each regional site.

All of the defending regional champions advanced through sectional play. They are: Martinsville at Bedford North Lawrence, Franklin at Franklin, Carmel at Greenfield-Central, Fort Wayne Dwenger at Huntington North, Northwestern at Lafayette Jefferson, and Goshen at LaPorte.

The state finals will be contested Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 with 18 holes each day at the Prestwick Country Club in Avon. Tee times each day will begin at 8 a.m. The low nine teams and any other team within 20 strokes of the lead after the first round on Oct. 4 will return for the second round Oct. 11. Individually, the low nine players -- excluding any who advance with their team -- and any other players within six strokes of the individual lead after the first round will advance to the second round Oct. 11.
