1998 STATE FINALS

October 2 & 5, 1998

Prestwick Country Club, Avon

HARDIN, MARTINSVILLE REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPIONS

Leigh Anne Hardin of Martinsville shot an even-par 71 in the final round to finish with a 36-hole total of 142 and win her second consecutive individual title while leading the Artesians to their fourth straight team title in the 26th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Golf State Finals Oct. 5, 1998 at Prestwick Country Club in Avon.

It was the seventh title in the last eight years for Martinsville. The Artesians, coached by Sharon Most for each of their championships, have finished first or second every year since 1990. With its four-peat, Martinsville becomes the 23rd school to win four or more consecutive IHSAA state championships in one sport. The longest IHSAA consecutive title streak is 12, held by Carmel in girls swimming and diving from 1986-87 through 1997-98.

Martinsville's second-round team total of 308 broke the 18-hole team record set by the Artesians with a 611 in the second round of the 1997 state finals. Their 626 score for 36 holes was just off the 623 total of 1997 that stands as the tournament record.

Fort Wayne Dwenger finished second at 653, followed by Franklin (661), Carmel (671) and Indianapolis Cathedral (685).

Hardin, a junior who won the United States Golf Association Girls Junior title in August, tied the IHSAA state tournament 36-hole record of 142 set by Katy Wilkinson in 1996. Hardin tallied three birdies and three bogeys in each of the two rounds. She just missed breaking the record as birdie putts on her 35th and 36th holes lipped out. Hardin was the tournament runner-up to Wilkinson as a freshman in 1996 with a 144 total and won with 143 in 1997. In addition to playing on three state championship golf teams, Hardin also was a member of Martinsville's state championship basketball teams in 1996-97 and 1997-98.

Mary Lidester, a senior at Lafayette Jefferson, finished as the tournament runner-up for the second straight year by shooting a two-over-par 73 in the second round to finish eight strokes back at 150. Jessica Till of Fort Wayne Dwenger was third at 151, followed by teammate Lauren Gant and Noblesville's Ashley Prange at 152. Ambry Bishop of Franklin was sixth at 154.

The final round was postponed two days after an early morning downpour made the course unplayable on Oct. 3. The second round started amid fog and a light mist. By mid-day the precipitation had ended, the sun broke through and the temperature rose to the mid-70s with an increasingly strong breeze. The par-71 course was shortened from 5,700 yards from the first round to 5,535 yards for the second round by reducing the yardage significantly on the par-five 18th hole.

LIDESTER NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD RECIPIENT

Mary Lidester, a senior at Lafayette Jefferson High School, was named the 1998 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Girls Golf. Lidester shot a 77-73-150 to finish second individually in the 1998 IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals. She was the runner-up in 1997 and tied for eighth in 1996. Lidester is a member of the National Honor Society and also plays basketball for the Bronchos. She ranks 30th in her senior class of 382 students. She is the first Lafayette Jefferson student to receive the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in girls golf. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lidester's name.
