1996-97 State Finals in Review
Evansville Memorial ended Carmel's bid for a third straight state title with a 1-0 victory over the previously unbeaten Greyhounds in the state championship match of the Third Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Soccer Championships November 2, 1996 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.
Coached by Joe Lattner, Evansville Memorial completed a 19-3 season by defeating Penn 3-1 in the semifinals and Carmel in the championship.
The championship match was a defensive battle, with Memorial recording only four shots on goal to Carmel's 12. The only goal came 6:14 into the second period when junior midfielder Holly Wimberger found an empty net.
Carmel, which had entered tournament play ranked No. 1 in the state coaches association poll, advanced to the state championship match with a 2-0 victory over Homestead. Carmel finished the season 19-1-2.
Souhaila McReynolds of Evansville Memorial High School was selected by the Executive Committee as the 1996 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Girls Soccer. Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Memorial High School in the name of McReynolds.
A record total of 136 schools and 2,959 participants
began competition at the sectional level.
