SCECINA MEMORIAL WINS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Indianapolis Scecina Memorial beat North Posey by the score of 5-0 in the class 2A state softball championship game at Ben Davis High School.

 

The Scecina Crusaders led off the game with back-to-back triples by their lead off hitter Hannah Zimmerman and second hitter Theresa Weinzerl. The Crusaders ended up with two runs in the first inning.

 

In the third inning, Jamie Goss of Scecina hit a ball over the right fielder’s head and ended up on third base. She scored on a single by Emily Wethington to put Scecina up by a score of 3-0. It was after Wethington’s hit, North Posey coach Michelle Sells replaces starting pitcher Jordan Redman with Laura Reising.

 

Wethington, in the fifth inning, hammered a Reising pitch over the center field fence for a two-run homerun. Goss had a single and was on base during Wethington’s homer. Wethington had three RBI’s on the day.

 

Wethington also got it done for the Crusaders from the mound. The senior hurler held the North Posey Vikings to no runs on one hit. This North Posey team that put 10 runs on the board in the Friday’s semi-final game against Jimtown. Wethington set a class 2A record for the strikeouts in a championship game with 13. The previous mark was set in 1999 by Ariane Kurtz of Roncalli. Wethington compiled an unblemished 22-0 record on the mound.

 

Numerous records were set or tied in the game. Along with the strikeout record, Wethington set a record for homeruns with one and tied a record for RBI’s with three. Scecina’s Zimmerman ties a 2A record for hits in a game with three and ties the triple mark with one. Weinzerl of Scecina also ties the record for triples in a game with one.

 

North Posey, making the state finals for the second consecutive year, finishes the season with a 23-9 record. Scecina, coached by 15th year head coach Tom Moorman, finish the season with a 31-1 record. Their lone loss was a 13 inning one to nothing loss to 4A school Center Grove. This was Scecina’s second trip to the state finals. Their first appearance came in 2004.

 

 

Emily Wethington of Scecina Memorial named Mental Attitude Award winner

Emily Wethington of Scecina Memorial High School was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A softball.

 

Wethington finished 11th in her class of 88. Her work in the drama department has been extensive, appearing in the lead role in four school productions and participating in School Show Choir as well as president of the National Honor Society.

 

In the community, she has worked with the Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving Dinner, coordinated 16 blood drives and volunteers at the Sugar Creek Nursing Home. Wethington was winner of the John J. Henninger Christian Service Memorial Award and the Catholic Theology Certificate of High Achievement.

 

She is the daughter of Carmen and Nancy Wethington and will be attending Ohio University on a full softball scholarship. There she will study exercise science.

 

Steve Patterson of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Scecina Memorial High School in the name of Emily Wethington.
