Jasper seniors Dana Schitter and Erin Giesler rallied from a one-set deficit and claimed the doubles crown at the Ninth Annual IHSAA Girls Individual Tennis State Finals.

After losing a first set tiebreaker to Terre Haute South's Jennifer Kirk and Kristen Clary, Schitter and Giesler controlled the next two sets to win the championship with a 6-7 (8-6), 6-4, 6-3 victory. They became the first players -- boys or girls -- from Jasper to win a state tennis championship.

Schitter and Giesler finished their season at 32-1. They had advanced to the championship round with a 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 victory over Merrillville's Danielle Moore and Demetra Stath.

Kirk, a junior, and Clary, a freshman, had won a tough three-setter from Homestead's Carly Everett and Emily Figel, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the other semifinal. Kirk and Clary, who finished the season 23-2, had helped their team to the state runner-up title the previous week.

In the consolation match, Everett and Figel defeated Moore and Stath, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to complete the season 31-4. Moore and Stath, who finished at 32-3, fell in the semifinals and finished fourth -- both for the second straight year.
