2001-02 IHSAA Girls Track & Field State Tournament Series

State Finals Summary

It's A Three-Peat For Fort Wayne Northrop

In competiton played out in wind, rain and brilliant sunshine, delayed occasionally by lightning in the area of the Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, the state's top-ranked team, Fort Wayne Northrop, proved to be just exactly that, as the Bruins won their third consecutive state championship in front of a record crowd of 4,267, outscoring second place Warren Central, 60-49 on May 31, 2002.

Northrop, coached by Tom Knudson during each of its last three championship years, also has state titles in 1981 and 1991 to its credit.

It was a constant battle throughout the evening between Northrop, Fort Wayne Concordia and Warren Central as they were in constant competition with each other for the top spots from start to finish of the 29th annual event. Concordia finished third with 41 points, followed by Carmel with 34 and Gary West Side with 31.

The night got off to a great start for Carmel, looking for its third title, as their 3200 Meter Relay team broke the state record of 9:17.45, which had been set by the Greyhounds in 1999. This year’s team turned in a time of 9:13.41 with seniors Jaime Calhoun, Courtney Ellabarger, Michelle Rafferty and sophomore Magin Kebert carrying the batons.  Carmel has now won the event five of the seven years it has been contested with Calhoun and Kebert repeating as members of last year’s championship team.

Lorian Price, a junior from Warren Central, finished first in the 100 Meter High Hurdles in a time of 14.26.  Her teammate, Brianna Cunningham, finished fourth, which put the Warriors in first place at that time by six points over Carmel.

In the 100 Meter Dash, junior Christina Poulson from Delta put her name in the record book for the second year in a row, following last year's 11.93 effort with a 11.90 time this year.

In one of the distance events, the 1600 Meter Run, junior Cassie Hunt of North Putnam was the class of the field with a time of 4:54.43 and thus becoming the first Cougar in school history to climb to the top step of the podium in girls state competition.

In the other endurance testing long-distance event, the 3200 Meter Run, Jessica Gall from West Lafayette was still strong at the finish as she was timed at 10:38.61, nearly four seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Tiffany Redlarczyk from Lake Central, who entered the event as the defending champ. Gall was this year's Cross Country state champion as well as Mental Attitude Award winner.

Fort Wayne Concordia had a chance to strut its stuff in the 400 Meter Relay as four sophomores, Christina Whitt, Joy Eloms, Amber Woodson and Amber Williams, finished first in a time of 47.32, breaking last year’s record mark of 47.62, set by crosstown rival, Fort Wayne Northrop. Northrop finished second on Friday evening with a 47.33 clocking.

Fort Wayne Concordia became the first school with multiple wins on the night when sophomore Christina Whitt, a member of that victorious 400 Meter Relay team, was the top performer in the 200 Meter Dash in a time of 24.46, just edging out Shauntel Elcock of Fort Wayne Northrop who was clocked at 24.50.

Sophomore Temeka Kincy of Lawrence North was looking to make it two in a row in the 400 Meter Dash, but Elcock of Fort Wayne Northrop put a damper on that effort with a powerful 54.33 clocking, over two seconds ahead of Kincy and the best time turned in since North Central’s Maicel Malone repeated in 1986 and 1987 with 52.42 and 53.78 readings, respectively.

Amanda Stoops, a senior from Hobart, prevented South Bend Adams' LaQuesha Taylor from back-to-back wins in the 300 Meter Low Hurdles as she turned in a time of 42.84, the first time since 1993 that the winner was under 43.00.  She becomes the Brickies' first girls state track and field champ.

Plymouth raced into the win column in the 800 Meter Run as Morgan Unceny, a junior, led the pack across the finish line in a time of 2:13.04.  It was the first time the school has ever had a state titelist in any event during girls track competition.

In the final event of the evening, the 1600 Meter Relay, Fort Wayne Northrop put the finishing touches on their fifth crown as sophomores Zakiya Robinson and Kyndal Carr and freshmen Lakeesha Burnett and Shauntel Elcock crossed the finish line in a state record time of 3:47.89 for ten points to put them over the top. They broke the mark of 3:48.18 set by Fort Wayne South Side in 1983.

In the field events, senior Andrea Dalla Rosa of Martinsville, last year's winner in the Shot Put, grabbed the top spot in the Discus with a throw of 154' 6", the only participant over the 150' mark and nearly 17' ahead of her nearest competition.

Dalla Rosa had to settle for second place in her attempt to defend in the Shot Put as her put of 46' 3/4" left her just short of Pike's Alexis Bowens' 46' 1".  That distance was the best in state competition since 1999 when Stacy Martin of Edgewood set the state mark of 49' 7".

In the High Jump, senior Jean Schaffer became the first Bloomington South athlete to capture top honors in the event with a jump of 5' 9".

The Long Jump was perhaps affected more than any other event by weather conditions, but when the stormy weather had settled, freshman Aundrea Brown of Fort Wayne North Side had bettered the field by over eight inches to capture the title with a leap of 19' 7 1/2".

Rebecca Berdel, a four-time sectional discus champion who was appearing in her third IHSAA State Finals in track and field, was named winner of the 2002 Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to the recipient's high school.

A total of 6,155 students from 366 teams began competition at the sectional tournament level.
