Muncie Central wins

three-game thriller

Muncie Central overcame a first-game defeat and repeated as the Class 4A state champion with a 13-15, 15-5, 15-8 triumph over Fort Wayne Northrop in a battle of the state's No. 1- and No. 3-ranked Class 4A teams.

After regaining the momentum in the second game, the Bearcats of coach Dave Shondell led early in the third game before Fort Wayne Northrop (36-4) forged a tie a 8-8. From there, Muncie Central (36-3) showed championship form down the stretch with its 7-0 run.

It was the third straight Class 4A state title for the Bearcats and their third volleyball state title overall.

Leading the way was senior middle hitter Carman Malone with 17 kills in 33 attempts. Senior setter Meredith Fancher was credited with 35 assists. Muncie Central finished with a 14-match winning streak. Two of its three losses were to Class 2A state champion Muncie Burris and to Class 3A state champion Indianapolis Cathedral.

It was the second time in three years that Muncie Central outlasted the Bruins in a three-match to decide the Class 4A state title. In 1997, Muncie Central recorded a 7-15, 15-6, 15-11 victory. Fort Wayne Northrop also was the state runner-up to Martinsville in 1996, falling in three games in the final single-class state championship.

Coached by Larry Bleiler, Fort Wayne Northrop was led by senior Melissa Elmer with 11 kills and junior Lyndsey Stults with 12 kills. Senior Zehra Mecuk recorded 31 assists.

Muncie Central advanced in the morning semifinals by downing No. 2-ranked Center Grove 15-6, 15-8. Fort Wayne Northrop needed three games to eliminate Mishawaka 14-16, 15-7, 15-10.

Hibschman named IHSAA

Mental Attitude Award recipient

Lindsey Hibschman, a senior at Mishawaka High School, was named the 1999 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A volleyball by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Hibschman ranks No. 1 in her senior class of 293 students with a 4.0 grade point average. Involved in a number of extracurricular activities including the National Honor Society, she has been a member of the student council and athletic council all four years, and served as junior class vice president.

Athletically, she was a three-time participant in the IHSAA Volleyball State Finals and served as captain of the Cavemen this season. She also has been a three-year participant in tennis and in diving for one year.

Hibschman plans to attend Indiana University and major in psychology.

Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Hibschman's name to Mishawaka High School.

Class 3A

Indianapolis Cathedral

celebrates second title

Indianapolis Cathedral seized an early lead and stormed to a 15-5, 15-7 triumph over Mishawaka Marian to win its second volleyball state title. The top-ranked Irish (34-5) also were the Class 3A state champions in 1997. Both titles came under the direction of Jean Kesterson.

A balanced Irish attack was evident throughout the match, with three players contributing eight or more kills. Senior setter Amanda Matthews contributed 25 assists. The kills came from senior Katie Pollom (nine), junior Allyne Rebholz (eight) and junior Ellen Rehme (eight).

Mishawaka Marian (30-10), which entered the state tournament series unranked in the coaches poll, had lost to Indianapolis Cathedral 15-5, 15-8 early in the regular season. The Knights were playing in the state finals for the first time since 1973 when they won the state title.

Coached by Dan Anderson, Mishawaka Marian was led by senior Catherine Albert with four kills in seven attempts. Junior Carry Chelminiak contributed six assists.

Both teams advanced through the semifinals in three-game thrillers. Indianapolis Cathedral downed Yorktown 15-9, 14-16, 15-5 while Mishawaka Marian outlasted Providence 15-13, 9-15, 15-13.

Pollom named IHSAA

Mental Attitude Award recipient

Katie Pollom, a senior at Indianapolis Cathedral High School, was named the 1999 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A volleyball by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Pollom, a middle hitter for the state championship Irish, ranks 22nd in her class of 271 students. She serves on the school's student council executive board and is one of 16 seniors selected as peer counselors. She is also a member of the Cathedral chapter of the National Honor Society.

In volleyball, she was a first team all-state selection and a second team academic all-state selection in 1999. In 1997, she was a member of Cathedral's state championship volleyball team. She also played on the school's basketball team for two seasons.

Pollom plans to attend Indiana University on a volleyball scholarship; she is undecided on a major.

Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Pollom's name to Cathedral High School.

Class 2A

Muncie Burris claims

11th state championship

Muncie Burris successfully defended its Class 2A state champion and won its 11th IHSAA volleyball state title overall with a 15-8, 15-11 victory over Brownstown Central. The victorious Owls finished 38-2 and with a 22-match winning streak.

Top-ranked (2A) Muncie Burris set the tone early by taking a 6-0 edge in the first game. The Owls were led by senior outside attacker Cherelle Lampkins with 11 kills. Junior setter Sara Osterhoff and senior outside attacker Whitney Ashcraft contributed 10 assists each. Osterhoff also recorded 27 assists.

Brownstown Central, ranked second in the final coaches association poll, closed 38-2 and had a 32-match winning streak snapped in the championship. The Lady Braves received six kills from junior middle hitter Leah Wischmeier. Brownstown Central also finished as the Class 2A state runner-up to Muncie Burris in 1998, falling 15-3, 15-6 in the championship.

In semifinals action earlier in the day at Westfield, Muncie Burris advanced 15-0, 15-6 over Winchester while Brownstown Central downed Westview 15-11, 15-7.

Other state championship years for Muncie Burris were 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1997 in the single-class format. The Owls have won the Class 2A state title three straight years. All of the titles have come under the direction of coach Steve Shondell.

Necessary named IHSAA

Mental Attitude Award recipient

Nicole Necessary, a senior at Winchester Community High School, was named the 1999 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A volleyball by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Necessary ranks sixth in her senior class of 136 students. She was the vice president of her freshman and sophomore classes, serves on the school's student council and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also was a Hoosier Girls State delegate this past summer.

Athletically, Necessary is a four-year letter winner in volleyball as an outside hitter, and also has participated in basketball and track. She served as the volleyball team's co-captain in 1999.

Necessary plans to pursue a college degree at Ball State, Manchester, Huntington or Indiana with a major in elementary education.

Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Necessary's name to Winchester Community High School.

Class A

Michigan City Marquette

captures first state title

Michigan City Marquette won its first IHSAA state title in any sport with a 15-9, 15-13 victory over Cowan in the Class A state championship match. The Blazers, coached by Curtis Johnson, completed an undefeated season at 40-0.

No. 1-ranked (Class A) Michigan City Marquette rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 8-5 to win the first game. The Blazers sealed the game by scoring the final six points after a 9-9 tie.

In the second game, Michigan City Marquette took command early with leads of 4-0 and 10-6, but Cowan hung tough. The Blackhawks tied the game at 6-6 and trailed 13-12 before Michigan City Marquette took the victory. Senior Lori Lewalski scored the winning point on a kill up the middle.

The loss ended a storybook season for No. 2-ranked Cowan (28-10), which included the school's first volleyball sectional title and first appearance in an IHSAA state finals in any sport. The Blackhawks were coached by Chuck Wallen.

Senior outside hitter Kylee Osborne delivered 10 kills for Michigan City Marquette and senior setter Arielle Linderman registered 25 assists. For Cowan, senior middle hitter Angela Vinson had 10 kills and senior setter Emily Enochs recorded 20 assists.

In the morning semifinals played at Noblesville, Michigan City Marquette eliminated Rising Sun 15-7, 15-5 while Cowan ousted Springs Valley 15-8, 15-9.

Lewalski named IHSAA

Mental Attitude Award recipient

Lori Lewalski, a senior at Michigan City Marquette High School, was named the 1999 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class A volleyball by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Lewalski, a middle hitter for the state championship Blazers, ranks second in her class of 62 students. She serves as the vice president of the school's student council and as vice president of the Marquette chapter of the National Honor Society. She has earned the school's summa cum laude honor roll distinction during all four years of high school.

In volleyball, she was a second team all-state selection in 1998 and 1999. She also plays on the Marquette softball team and was its most valuable player in 1998.

Lewalski plans to attend Yale University with the career objective of studying law.
