GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE FINALS SATURDAY

With a combined record of 192-23, a field of eight outstanding teams will make their way to Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis this Saturday to square off in the 28th Annual IHSAA Girls High School Basketball Tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNEY BEGINS TONIGHT

The 93rd Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament Series will get underway in full force this evening at 64 sites throughout the state

Defending 4A champion Gary West Side will open up play in its own sectional against Lake Central.  Last year’s 3A winner, Delta, travels to Yorktown to meet the host Tigers.  The 2A winner in 2001-02, Speedway, hosts its own sectional and plays Indianapolis Ritter in the opener.  And, the class A defending champ, Rossville, meets Clinton Prairie in the Tri-Central curtain raiser.

The state’s top-rated teams will test the waters early.  Class 4A’s top team, Pike (22-0), opens up with a major test as they face North Central (Indpls.) (15-5) at Noblesville.  Gary Roosevelt (19-1), the leader in 3A, begins play in the bye bracket at Calumet, facing Griffith (18-3).  The top team in 2A, Cass (20-0), hosts its own sectional and meets Delphi (14-6) in the bye game.  In class A, Argos (20-1), number-one in this week’s poll, squares off against Southwood (11-8) at Culver Community.

The complete line-up of pairings for the 2003 tourney is available at 2003 Boys Basketball Tournament Pairings.

Anderson is the run-away all-time leader in sectional victories with 50.  Lafayette Jefferson is the leader in consecutive sectional crowns with 28 between 1945-1972.  You’ll find a complete list of sectional champs in the history section on the IHSAA web site under IHSAA Boys Basketball.

A.P. BOYS BASKETBALL POLL

Cass (20-0) is out front again in 3A.  And, in Class A, Argos (20-1) maintains the number one slot heading into tourney play.

The previous widest margin of victory had been 150 points back in 1994 also set by Carmel. Placing third in this year’s meet was Homestead with 131 points followed by Harrison (West Lafayette) with 128 and Yorktown in fifth with 127.5.
