253 TEAMS ENTERED FOR GIRLS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

A field of 253 teams, representing 1,818 athletes, has filed entry lists for the 30th annual IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament Series to be contested at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, just south of Indianapolis, beginning this week.

Among those entered are the Artesians of Martinsville, nine-time winners of the championship, the most recent of which occurred in 2000.  Western, located in Russiaville, garnered its first-ever girls golf title last year.  The Panthers are ranked number-one again in this week’s poll and return with a strong squad seeking to defend that title.

Sectional play will begin Friday, September 20, and continue on the following Saturday and Monday.  The regionals are slated for September 28, with the finals on October 4 and 5.  Admission is free at all levels of the state tourney.

WESTERN SHOWS WAY AGAIN IN ICGSA GIRLS GOLF POLL

The Panthers of Western are again at the top of the heap in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll.  Noblesville, Penn and Lafayette Jefferson remain three-four-five, while Carmel moves into the front-five.

Fremont and Roncalli were part of a three-way tie for 20th position last week, but have been replaced by Anderson Highland and Culver Academy.

FOOTBALL RANKINGS RELEASED

And then there were none.  Going into last Friday’s play, three teams in the state had not yet been scored upon.  That all changed as North Judson’s shutout streak came to an end when Culver Military managed a touchdown and point-after.  Merrillville put a pair of TD’s on the board against Portage to stop their streak.  And Heritage Hills was simply happy to outscore Jasper in their 23-21 win.

NEW LEADER IN BOYS TENNIS

The Center Grove Trojans, number-two in last week’s IHSTeCA Boys Tennis Poll, moved up a notch and took over the top spot in the September 16 listing, replacing North Central (Indpls.) which dropped to fifth.

Park Tudor grabbed the runner-up slot, up from third, followed by Bloomington North, sixth one week back, and Delta, which had logged in as seventh in the previous rankings.

Columbus North, which was tied for number-nineteen a week ago, was the only top-twenty unit to be dropped from the poll.

PANTHERS STILL PROWL AS #1 IN BOYS SOCCER POLL

For North Central (Indpls), it was another week as being listed as the state’s premier boys high school soccer team, but there were any number of changes in the rankings of those chasing the Panthers.

Indianapolis Cathedral jumped up to the runner-up spot after being ranked fifth a week ago. Washington, number-six in the previous ratings, climbed to third, with South Bend St. Joseph’s moving from eighth to fourth and Lawrence Central making the leap from eleventh to fifth.

Last week’s state runner-up, Fort Wayne Canterbury, dropped into a tie for eighth with Evansville Memorial, which had been ranked number-three previously.

CHANGES AMONG LEADERS IN VOLLEYBALL

Two of the classes in girls volleyball saw their leadership change in this week’s IHSVC Volleyball Poll.

In 2a, Muncie Burris dropped from first to second, replaced by Brownstown Central, last week’s number-two team.  In Class 3A, Delta saw its reign as the top-rated unit come to an end, as the Eagles were replaced by Indianapolis Bishop Chatard.  The Trojans were second on the list last week.

There was no change in 4A, with Muncie Central showing the way, again.  In Class A, Michigan City Marquette was once again voted to the top slot by the coaches.

A complete study of the latest ratings offered up by the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches is online at IHSVC Poll.
