FOOTBALL PAIRINGS WEDNESDAY

   Pairings for the 30th Annual IHSAA Football State Finals will be conducted at the IHSAA headquarters in Indianapolis on Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at 8:00 a.m.  Upon completion, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the draw will be posted on the web (ihsaa.org).

 

   Tourney sectional play will begin on Friday, October 25.  The state finals will again be played at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis on Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30.

 

   Credential requests may be made on company letterhead and mailed or faxed to Jerry Baker no later than November 25.  Requests received by November 18 will be mailed out to those approved working members of the media, otherwise they must be picked up at the gate.

   The latest football statistics through week seven of the 2002 season are updated as they are reported to the IHSAA by the respective schools and compiled on the web at 2002 Football Leaders.

 

PENN CAPTURES GIRLS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

   The Penn Kingsmen, under head coach Jim Garrett, picked up their second girls golf state championship on Saturday, October 5, at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, firing rounds of 335-322 (657).  Penn was also the state champ in girls golf in 1994, with Terry Tulchinsky at the helm, ending with a 685 total at the Golf Club of Prestwick.

 

   Last year’s defending champs, Western, finished second, six strokes off the pace with a 663 (347-316).  Noblesville finished in the number-three spot again, with Lafayette Jefferson and Hamilton Southeastern rounding out the top-five.

 

   Noblesville’s Sally Shonk was named mental attitude award winner.  Shonk had rounds of 75-74 (149) for the Lady Millers, to finished second to Katie Tewell of Center Grove who was the tournament medalist with rounds of 74-72 (146).

GIRLS GOLF ALL-STATE INDIVIDUALS HONORED

   The Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association has released its 2002 All-State Team.  It includes this year’s tourney medalist, Katie Tewell of Center Grove, and the mental attitude award winner, Sally Shonk of Noblesville.  For an in-depth look at this year’s elite unit, log on to 2002 IHSGCA All-State Team.

BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER LEADERS LISTED

BOYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT UNDERWAY

   The boys state tennis tournament got underway last weekend at 64 sectional sites.  Regional play is slated for October 8-9 at sixteen locations throughout the state, with the semi-states being contested on October 12.  The team state finals will be played at North Central (Indpls.) October 19,  with the singles/doubles on October 25-26.

 

   Last year’s state champs, Center Grove, defeated Whiteland 5—0 to win the Center Grove Sectional title.  The Trojans now move on to face Perry Meridian in the Center Grove Regional.

 LEADERS STILL THERE IN CROSS COUNTRY POLL

   The leaders remained the same in the girls and boys cross country poll this week, with Valparaiso hanging on to the top spot on the ladies’ side of the voting and Columbus North on the boys’.

VOLLEYBALL’S #1 TEAMS STILL SOLID

   The Volleyball leadership did not change in any of the four classes in this week’s Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches poll, with Muncie Central, Indianapolis Chatard, Brownstown Central and Michigan City Marquette comfortably ensconced in their same number-one positions.

VOLLEYBALL PAIRINGS NEXT WEEK

   Pairings for the 31st Annual Volleyball Tournament Series will held at 12:00 noon at the IHSAA office on Monday, October 14 and placed on the web (ihsaa.org) when completed, at approximately 2:00 p.m.

 

   The state tourney gets underway October 24, with the state finals slated for November 9 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

 

 

MILESTONES

Mary Cox of Boonville recorded her 500th career volleyball victory on October 1.  She is in her 21st year of coaching at the varsity level and has had two state finalists, 1984 and 1989.

 

Muncie South’s head football coach, Mike Paul,  captured his 100th career victory.

 

Carroll (Fort Wayne) recorded its 200th varsity soccer victory with a 5-0 win over Columbia City.  Over 17 years, the Chargers are 200-81-25.

 

North Miami’s Jena Hartley served 20 straight points in a 21-0 win over Eastern on October 3.  She then served the first 3 points of the next game for a school record 23 consecutive points.  Brianne Sunday also tied a school mark with 25 kills in the same match.

 

 

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

Eastern Hancock has hired Andrew Klepfer as its girls basketball coach. Klepfer, a first-year varsity coach, was an assistant to DeAnn Edge at EH last season.

 

Nick Davis is the new baseball coach at Mishawaka Marian.  He has been an assistant with the Knights in baseball, golf and football since coming to Marian in 2000.  Davis replaces R.C. Ganser who resigned following last season.
