INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING TITLES ON LINE FRIDAY & SATURDAY

A field of 224 of the state’s top wrestlers will take to the mats at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Friday, February 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

 

Returning champions include: Fernando Martinez (112), Highland, a winner at 103 a year ago; Angel Escobedo (130), Griffith, winner at 125 a year ago; Andrae Hernandez, Griffith 135, winner at 130 a year ago; Alex Tsirtsis (145), Griffith, who has captured three consecutive state titles at 119, 130 and 135; and Blake Maurer (171), Evansville Mater Dei, back to defend in that same class, after winning at 145 in 2001-02 and 130 in 2000-01.

GIRLS BASKETBALL ADVANCES TO REGIONAL ROUND

The 2003-04 IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament field has been whittled down to 64 teams heading into the regional round of the state tournament scheduled for this Saturday, February 21. 

 

Times:                         10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon,  8:00 p.m.

Ticket Information:      Single Session $6.00     Season $9.00

 

Three of the four defending champs are still alive.  The 2002-03 Class 4A champion, Kokomo (19-4), will meet Warsaw (23-2) in the Huntington North Regional.  In Class 3A, defending titleholder Beech Grove was eliminated by Roncalli.  Shenandoah (21-1), the Class 2A champ, continues play in the Indian Creek Regional, with Cambridge City Lincoln (17-6) as its opponent.  The Class A winner a year ago, Tri-Central (17-6), goes up against Indianapolis Lutheran (18-4) at Lapel.

 

Among the ranked teams, Class 4A No. 1 Ben Davis fell to Pike 57-56.  Brebeuf Jesuit, the leader in Class 3A, battles Roncalli at Mount Vernon (Fortville).  As mentioned, the front-runner in Class 2A, Shenandoah, will take on Cambridge City Lincoln at Indian Creek.  North Vermillion, tops in Class A, travels to North Daviess to meet Washington Catholic.

MEDIA:  A reminder that the 2003-04 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential will not provide entry into the 2004 IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 6, 2004.

 

Applications for credentials to this event must be mailed or faxed to our offices on company letterhead.  E-mail requests will not be honored.  Please provide the name of each person for whom you are requesting a credential, as each credential will be assigned only to that individual and he or she should be prepared to show identification from your organization if it is requested.

 

The credential form is also on the IHSAA website under Girls Basketball at Girls Basketball 2004 Credentials.

BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNEY PAIRINGS MONDAY

Pairings for the 94th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament Series will be conducted in a blind draw on Monday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. at Galyan’s in Castleton Square.  The draw, which is open to the public, will be broadcast live over WIBC Radio (1070), Indianapolis, and throughout the state on the IHSAA Radio Network.

WILDCATS STILL TOPS IN STATE IN BOYS BASKETBALL

Lawrence North maintained its strangle-hold on the top spot in this week’s IBCA Poll,  In fact, No. 1 through No. 6 remained the same, with Pike, North Central (Indpls.), Columbia City, Indianapolis Arlington and Munster following in order.  Only one new name made an appearance:  Muncie Burris (#18-t), replacing Bluffton.

BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN THURSDAY

The 67th Annual Boys Swimming & Diving Tournament Series will take to the pools at 20 Sites across the state this Thursday, February 19, 2004, with the preliminaries getting underway at 5:30 p.m.

 

Action continues on Saturday, February 21, at 9:00 a.m. with the diving preliminaries and semifinals, followed by the consolation and finals in all events at 2:00 p.m.  Single-session tickets are priced at $4.00.  A season ticket is $6.00.

 

Munster is the all-time leader in IHSAA Total Sectional Titles with 33, followed by Columbus North with 26 and Kokomo with 25.  You can check out last year’s sectional winners at 2003 Sectional Champions or a school-by-school listing at IHSAA Boys Swimming Sectional Champions By School.  (Please allow this large file sufficient time to load.)

MILESTONES

Junior Luke Zeller scored his 1000th-career point on February 6 in a matchup with Mitchell.  He is the first underclassman in school to do so.

 

Northview senior Logan Whitman passed the 1,500-point career mark on February 7 against Plainfield.

 

Eric Eaton of Northridge surpassed the 1,000-point plateau on February 7 in a contest with Wawasee.

 

The girls swim team set a Chesterton school record, for both girls and boys, by having a qualifier in each of the state finals events.

 

Tara Miller, a junior from North Harrison, reached the 1,000-point career milestone on February 5 in a game against Eastern (Pekin).

 

Ryan Wheeler set a New Albany boys basketball single-game scoring mark with 43 points in a loss to Louisville Male on February 11.

 

Danielle Rains, a senior at Eastern Greene,scored her 1,000th point against Clay City on Jan. 29th and finished her career with1,058, second behind 1991 graduate Jenny Holmes Jordan who scored 1,109.  Also, she broke the school's single season 3 point FG record with 74 and school career record with 142.

 

Chelsea Miller became the first girl in Shenandoah history to score her 1000th point during her junior season.

 

Wally Bennett, boys head swimming coach at Cass, picked up his 300th career victory on February 9.

IHSAA OVERTIME

Mike Marciano has been named head football coach at Southport, replacing Aaron Strader who resigned in December.

 

After nine seasons, Kevin Hofinger has announced his resignation as boys head soccer coach at Harrison (West Lafayette).

 

Dale McNeely, former principal at Cannelton High School passed away late last week.  He was a member of the IHSAA Board of Directors from 1992 to 1995.  Dale and Martha lived in Hanover, IN and more recently he has been on the school board for Southwestern (Hanover) High School.

 

Longtime assistant Jeff Richey takes over as the new head football coach at Seymour.  He replaces Joe Goodman who retired following the 2003 season.

 

Frank Amato has been named head football coach at South Bend Washington, replacing Brian Kinzie, who resigned last November.
