STATE FINALS FIELD SET FOR FOOTBALL

The 31st Annual IHSAA Football Tournament Series state finals field has been set, with action this Friday and Saturday, November 28-29 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

A pair of champions are still alive and defending their titles.  Roncalli, a six-time state champion, got by East Central on Friday and plays East Noble in the 4A title contest.  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, also with six championship trophies, was a winner over Heritage Hills on Saturday and advances to meet NorthWood in 3A competition

Defending Class 5A champion Ben Davis, 2002 Class A titleholder Southwood and last year’s Class 2A winner, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, were all eliminated earlier in the tourney.

The combined record of the remaining 10 teams in the state tournament is 125 – 14 (.899) and represents 22 previous state champions.

The “southern” teams will be listed as the home teams on the scoreboard at the RCA Dome, though, by virtue of a coin toss at the State Finals Meeting at the IHSAA offices on Monday, Seeger, Harding, Indianapolis Chatard, Roncalli and Penn will all wear dark jerseys.

In conjunction with the Indiana High School Athletic Association and the Indiana Football Coaches Association, the Colts will cite those outstanding student-athletes with an award called the 2003 Indiana High School Academic All-Stars.  The citation corresponds with the state high school championship games taking place at the RCA Dome.

Media members are invited to cover Saturday’s press conference.  Reporters and photographers covering the championship games may report to the ATA South Lounge by 2:45 p.m.  Reporters should take the elevator to the floor level and proceed through the glass doors straight-ahead to the lounge.  Photographers may reach the lounge via the stadium tunnels.  Media not attending the games, but wishing to cover the press conference may enter the RCA Dome at the Senate Street will call entrance.  For more information, please call Pam Humphrey at the Indianapolis Colts complex at (317) 808-5111.

The 24 2003 Indiana High School Academic All-Stars will be honored initially on Saturday, and they will be presented at halftime of the Colts-New England Patriots game on November 30 (kickoff is 1:00 p.m. ET).

For the complete release from the Indianapolis Colts, go to 2003 Indianapolis Colts Academic All-Stars

CHANGES ATOP THE GIRLS BASKETBALL LEADERBOARDS

As the girls’ 2003-04 basketball season jumps into high gear, there have already been any number of changes in the top spots of the ICGSA Polls.

In Class 4A, North Central (Indpls.) moved into the No. 1 position, ousting Warsaw, who dropped to 9th.  North Vermillion jumped into the lead in Class A, with last week’s top squad, Tri-Central, falling to No. 5.  The leaders in Class 3A, Brebeuf Jesuit, and Class 2A, Shenandoah, managed to maintain their lofty perches.

Dropping out of the top-10:  Perry Meridian (4A);  Corydon Central (3A);  North Harrison (3A);  Switzerland County (2A);  Washington Township (A);  Morristown (A).
