BOYS BASKETBALL
REGIONALS THIS SATURDAY
The field of 388 teams has
been whittled to 64 as the 95th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State
Tournament Series reaches the regional round. Sixteen sites will host three
games each this Saturday, March 12 with the first game scheduled to begin at
Leading the way into the regionals are two defending state champions, one unbeaten
team, one squad which won its school’s first sectional crown in more than sixty
years and two schools who won their very first sectional championship.
Class 4A Lawrence North and
3A Evansville Mater Dei are the only two defending state champs who
successfully navigated the sectional waters last week. Lawrence North (20-2),
winners of 12 straight games, won all three of its contests at the Noblesville
Sectional and will face cross-town rival Pike (22-2) in the Pike Regional at

For the first time since
World War II ended, the Lapel Bulldogs are proudly wearing the tag of sectional
champions. Located south of
Winning their first
sectional titles in school history over the weekend were Roncalli
and Heritage Christian. The Rebels won all three 3A sectional games at
Whiteland by an average margin of 23 points. They joined the IHSAA as a member
school in 1969. Heritage Christian didn’t take much time, however. The Eagles
are in their fifth year as a member school and are playing in their third state
tournament. The team had lost in the opening round each of the previous two

REQUESTS BEING ACCEPTED FOR BOYS BASKETBALL STATE FINALS
Requests for media
credentials to the 95th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals on
Saturday, March 26 are now being accepted.
All requests, except for
live radio and internet broadcasts, should be made to the attention of Jason
Wille, IHSAA Sports Information Director, on company letterhead and faxed to
317-575-4244. E-mail requests will not be considered. Requests for live radio
and internet broadcasts should be made to Mark Higdon, Associated Sports
Productions, Inc. at 317-633-1462.
The black, laminated pass
issued earlier this year and known as the “2004-05 IHSAA State Finals Media
Credential” WILL NOT be accepted for admittance. This event, like football and
girls basketball, requires a separate application.
Those approved requests can
be mailed or picked up at the State Finals Press Conference at Conseco Fieldhouse on Monday
morning, March 21 if indicated on your request form. All approved requests
received Monday, March 21 or later will be held for pickup on Saturday, March
26 at the Media Entrance of Conseco Fieldhouse.
As a friendly reminder, the
IHSAA does not issue credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state
competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic
department.
Of note, the IHSAA asks your
cooperation in limiting your requests to legitimate, working members of the
media. Credentials are not transferable and unauthorized usage may result in
revocation of credential privileges. Also, children will not be granted
credentials and should not be brought to the venue. Your cooperation is
appreciated.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS
The 33rd
Annual IHSAA Gymnastics State Tournament Series reaches the second of its three
stages this week as participants head to regionals
this Friday and Saturday. Of the four sites hosting a regional, Columbus East,
Huntington North and
The top two
teams at each site will advance as a complete squad to the state meet. Also
moving on will be the top six place winners in each event, the top six
all-around performers and any participant who receives the score of the sixth
place finisher at last year’s state meet. Those standards include:

Defending
champion Hobart did not advance from the Chesterton Sectional last weekend so a
new team champion is assured when the state finals commence on March 19. Fort
Wayne Northrop senior Brianna Neumann, last year’s state champ on the uneven
bars and the only defending champ still competing in this year’s tourney, won
the same event last Saturday at the Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran Sectional to
help her team to a second place finish and a spot in the Huntington North
Regional.

Bishop Dwenger led the state in points accumulated
with 113.425 in winning the Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran Sectional. Lawrence
Central, with 112.075, was second in taking the Warren Central Sectional crown,
and Center Grove, winners at Columbus East, were third with 111.975. | Sectional Results
