SOFTBALL SECTIONALS UNDERWAY THIS WEEK

Softball games at 64 sectional sites continue this week across the state in each of four different classes in the 22nd Annual IHSAA State Tournament Series. Championship teams will be crowned later this week with some as early as Wednesday night.

This week’s sectional winners will advance to one of 16 regional sites (four teams at each site) on Saturday, June 3, for two semifinal games and an evening championship contest.

Monday’s opening round saw a pair of higher ranked teams fall to lower ranked teams. Class 4A No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern was upended by No. 6 Carmel, 2-0, in 11 innings at the Westfield Sectional. Also, 3A No. 7 Heritage Hills lost at No. 10 Evansville Memorial, 1-0, thanks to a no-hitter thrown by senior Krista Price. Price wiffed 10 Patriots batters and allowed only two base runners via a walk and an error.

The top two ranked teams in 3A will square off tonight in the semifinals of the Hamilton Heights Sectional. No. 1 Pendleton Heights and No. 2 New Palestine each won on Monday and will meet at 5 p.m. EDT for the right to play in Wednesday’s championship game.

SECTIONALS

Dates: Monday, May 22 – Saturday, May 27, 2006.

Times: Determined by host schools.

Admission: $4.00 per session or $7.00 all sessions.

Home Team: The second-named team in each game is designated as the home team except when they advanced by virtue of a bye.  The home team shall have choice of dugout except when participating against the host school.  In a six team tournament, the teams drawing the bye will play in the second semifinal game, and will be the visiting team in the championship game.

Ranked third in the most recent state coaches poll, the Panthers will be looking for their state-best ninth consecutive regional crown on Wednesday.

Individual sectional play for undefeated No. 1 singles and doubles players also continues this week at the team regional sites with survivors moving on to the individual regional round on Saturday, June 3, at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
