BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS SET

A field of 387 teams and 7,219 student-athletes will begin play at the end of the month as the pairings for the 41st Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series were drawn this morning at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis.

The tournament will begin with 64 sectionals conducted in four different classes beginning Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day), and continuing through the week concluding on Saturday, June 2. Daily schedules for each tournament site will be listed on the IHSAA website as they become available from the hosts. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

Each of the sectional champions will advance to a one-game regional contest to be played Tuesday, June 5, on the home field of the even-numbered sectional champion (see pairings).

The 32 regional champions – eight in each class – will advance to one of eight semi-state sites on Saturday, June 9. Two semifinal games will be played early in the day at each site with the two winners returning for a championship game with a berth in the state finals on the line.

This year’s state finals, scheduled for Friday, June 15, and Saturday, June 16, will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis for the 10th time. The 4A state championship game, which will begin at 8 pm ET/7 pm CT on Saturday, will be televised live on the Indiana Cable Network to systems throughout the state. The schedule and order for the three other title games will be announced following the semi-state games.

Two member schools will be making their first appearance in this year’s baseball state tournament including Fishers, which will meet town rival Hamilton Southeastern in Class 4A’s Sectional 10 played at Westfield, and Guerin Catholic, which plays Heritage Christian in Class 2A’s Sectional 43 at Speedway.

Among the top-ranked teams in each class, 4A No. 1 Center Grove will meet Franklin Central in the first round of Sectional 12; Norwell (3A) will take on Fort Wayne Elmhurst in Sectional 21 at Peru; Northwestern (2A) is paired against Taylor in Sectional 40 at Eastbrook and; Michigan City Marquette (A) is scheduled to play Westville in Sectional 50 at South Central (Union Mills).

The defending state champions will begin their 2007 tournament trails the following way: Fort Wayne Snider (4A) meets Huntington North in Sectional 6 at Homestead; Jasper (3A) will host Washington in Sectional 31; North Posey, the two-time defending champ in 2A, takes on Crawford County in Sectional 48 at Southridge and; Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian (A) plays Elkhart Christian Academy in Sectional 53 at Fort Wayne Canterbury.
