FOOTBALL STATE TOURNAMENT DRAW SET FOR OCT. 3

The pairings for the 34th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament Series will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 pm EDT / 6 pm CDT.

First round pairings for the 40 sectionals will be announced via the IHSAA Championship Radio Network and be posted to ihsaa.org at the conclusion of the 90-minute broadcast. A complete list of radio affiliates carrying the broadcast will be announced the week prior to the draw. Sectional first round games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 20.

In other fall sports, pairings for both boys and girls soccer tournaments will take place on Monday, Sept. 25, at 8 am EDT while the draw for volleyball is set for Monday, Oct. 9, at 8 am EDT.

STATE STATISTICAL LEADERS

Information as of Tuesday, September 5, 2006

The following lists of statistical leaders are compiled from information contained at Athlistics.com, the IHSAA’s exclusive athletic statistics reporting and publishing service. The IHSAA encourages each of its member schools to participate by registering for free at Athlistics.com and updating team and individual statistics by 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT each Monday through the end of the season. Subscribers to the site will be able to assist their favorite school’s athletic department as 25 percent of subscription revenue benefits the school designated by the individual.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

  • Michael Beck has been named head coach of the Marion Lakeview Christian boys’ basketball team.  Beck replaces Ryan Biegel.

  • With his first completion of the game last Friday night, Concord senior Bob Cira became the second Elkhart County quarterback to pass for more than 5,000 yards in a career, joining Goshen’s Rick Mirer.

  • Rich Clark of Randolph Southern will step down as the girls’ basketball head coach but will continue as the school’s athletic director.  He had two coaching tenures with the Rebels from 1986-97 and 2000-05.  Clark led the Rebels to five sectional championships and four consecutive Mid-Eastern Conference championships.

  • Harding football coach Sherwood Haydock collected his 100th career coaching victory on Friday in the Hawks’ 50-8 victory at Fort Wayne Elmhurst. Haydock is 100-97 in 19 seasons including the last seven at Harding.

  • Marybeth Lebo, head volleyball coach at LaPorte, earned her 500th career victory on Saturday, Aug. 26, as the Slicers downed Lake Central at the Plymouth Invitational. Lebo has headed the school’s volleyball program for 18 seasons.

  • Adam Lingerfelt will take over as head volleyball coach for Goshen.  Lingerfelt replaces Lori Shreiner who had coached the Lady Redskins for three years.  Lingerfelt takes over a team that finished 19-14 last season.

  • North Central (Indianapolis) boys soccer coach Jerry Little earned the 400th victory of his career as his Panthers defeated Terre Haute North, 12-0, on Saturday. Little became the North Central coach in 1984 and has guided the school to five IHSAA state titles and two state runner-up finishes.

  • Mike Luttrull of Avon has become the schools all-time leading scorer in boys soccer.  He passed Matt Nirrengarten when he scored his 65th career goal against Danville on August 15. Currently Luttrull has 75 career goals.

  • Jason Searcy will fill in for Betsey Moore as the head coach of the Centerville girls’ basketball team.  Searcy has experience with coaching the freshman and junior varsity teams.  He graduated from Centerville and is also a business education teacher at the high school.

  • Zionsville has named Steve Simmons as their new varsity boys golf coach.  Simmons has served as the middle school coach for the last 10 years.

  • Marion football coach Mark Surface collected his 250th career win in a 53-23 win over South Bend Adams.  The Giants’ 47-point second half ensured Surface of his milestone victory.
