GIRLS GOLF REGIONALS THIS SATURDAY

Six defending regional champions from a year ago have advanced to this year’s regional round of the 34th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Tournament Series. Eighteen-hole action is scheduled for seven courses around the state this Saturday, Sept. 23, with the top three teams at each site, along with the top three individuals (including ties for third place) not with an advancing team earning a spot in next week’s state finals.

Last weekend, the top two ranked teams in the state coaches poll, No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern and No. 2 Martinsville, each carded a state-best 302. Hamilton Southeastern won the sectional title at Bent Tree in Westfield, while Martinsville won its fourth consecutive championship and 20th overall at Cascades in Bloomington.

The sectional at Bent Tree, hosted by Brebeuf Jesuit, produced three of the top four sectional scores in the state. Placing second to Hamilton Southeastern was No. 5 Noblesville at 310 and No. 3 Brebeuf at 312. Those three teams will be among the nine battling for team honors at Westwood Country Club in New Castle this Saturday.

Six individuals shot 72 or better led by sophomore Autumn Duke of Hamilton Southeastern who’s 68 at Bent Tree topped all. She was followed by Brebeuf senior Aimee Neff and senior Kristen Harrington of Harrison (West Lafayette) who shot a 69 at Bent Tree and Lafayette Municipal, respectively. Lina Pasquali’s 70 at Noble Hawk in Kendallville earned medalist honors for the senior while 72 was the winning score for Seymour junior Jessica Collins at Shadowood and Boonville senior Maggie Wood at Fendrich.

Also of note was Twin Lakes which won its ninth consecutive sectional crown at Logansport’s Dykeman Park, the state’s longest active string in the sport. Evansville Memorial, Greensburg and Valparaiso also extended their streaks to seven straight years.

Floyd Central, Pendleton Heights, Plymouth and Union County each won their first sectional championship in girls golf.

Barring any weather delays, results from each regional site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available from the hosts. Also, pairings and tee-times for the state finals are scheduled to be available Monday morning as long as play is completed at all seven courses.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

Carmel boys tennis coach Mike Bostic earned the 100th dual match victory of his career as the Greyhounds took a 3-2 decision from Park Tudor on Sept. 6. Bostic has been the Carmel coach for seven years and guided the school to state championships in 2003 and 2004.

With a 38-10 win over Wawasee on September 8, Concord football coach Tim Dawson scored his 100th career victory.  Coach Dawson is in his 18th season at Concord.

Charlie Fry was named swimming and diving coach at North Central High School. He was a former swimmer at Auburn and comes to the school after coaching the Lancaster (Pa.) Aquatic Club since 1999. He takes over the Panthers and the Washington Township Swim Club following the departure of Bruce Patmos, who coached at the school for one season. Patmos guided North Central to a boys state championship and a third-place finish in the girls state meet.

Clinton Central coach George Gilbert notched his 150th career win as the Bulldogs beat Tri-Central 82-6. Nine players scored touchdowns for Clinton Central, which set a school record for points.

Whiteland volleyball coach Debbie Gill won her 300th varsity volleyball match on Thursday, Sept. 14th with a victory over Southwestern (Shelbyville).

The Hoosier Crossroads Conference announced it has created the position of executive secretary to maintain game, season and yearly information for the league. Anyone interested should contact an athletic director or principal at one of the 10 member schools.

Heather Iffert resigned as girls tennis coach at North Central. Iffert guided the Panthers for 15 seasons, including team state titles in 1992, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2004. She is the former Heather Clark who won the 1981 IHSAA state championship in singles while at Brebeuf.

A travel trophy to honor the football series between Brebeuf Jesuit and Culver Academies was unveiled during Friday’s game between the two schools and recognized Rev. J. Paul O'Brien, a former Brebeuf Jesuit administrator, and Dr. George Wilkins, a Culver Academy graduate and supporter. Both men passed away in the past two years. Culver Academies won this year’s game, 30-8, in Indianapolis.

After completing two approved coaching courses to earn a five-year waiver from the IHSAA and meeting the new rule for non-teaching coaches, Heritage Christian girls basketball coach Rick Risinger will return to the sideline this season. Risinger was an interim coach following the death of Mark Richards last season and guided the Eagles to the 2006 Class 2A state title.
