The winners
got on the board first in the opening inning.
Tim Rooze (12) was hit by a pitch to lead off
the game and came around to score when Bobby Mosser
(10) doubled down the left field line. Shakamak tied the game in the bottom of the first as Josh Netherlain (12) singled to second and Matt Davis (12) drove
him in with a double down the left field line.
In the
third, the Knights, under Tim Bordenet, regained the
lead, scoring a pair, as Henry Arth (12) and Kyle
Thompson (12), who had singled, came around to score. The Lakers, coached by Chip Sweet, came right
back in the bottom of the inning to close the lead to one, as Jared Utterback (11) scored on an error.
The fourth
inning saw Lafayette Central Catholic add to its lead with Rooze
scoring his second tally on a long double over the centerfielder’s head by Arth.
They
stretched the lead to four in the fifth, chasing home a pair of unearned runs
by Evan Martin (12), who had reached on a fielder’s choice, and Ryan Svenstrup (11), who was hit by a pitch, making it a 6-2
game. Shakamak
again put a single marker on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning, but
Central Catholic broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring three
times, and adding two more in the top of the seventh.
The game
marked new records for most hits by a single team (15), combined hits (23) and
total runs by both teams (14).

HAMMOND BISHOP NOLL TAKES HOME CLASS 2A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Pushing
across a run in the second inning was really all Hammond Bishop Noll (21-11)
needed as their strong pitching and error-free fielding led the Warriors to a
2-0 victory in the 2004 IHSAA Class 2A Baseball Championship over Wapahani (27-6) at Victory Field on
Bishop
Noll, coached by Dave Griffin, opened the scoring in the second inning when
senior Mike Kirgis, who had reached on a fielding
error, scored on an Eric Pelletier single to right. Wapahani,
under Brian Dueley, had a chance answer in the bottom
of the inning by loading the bases with Raiders with no outs, but Hammond Noll
starting pitcher Ryan Bobos (11) retired the next 3
batters on a dribbler back to the mound, a tag at home after a failed squeeze
play and a strike out to end the threat.
Pitching
and defense took over for the next several innings, including a strong
defensive play on an attempted steal of home by Wapahani
left fielder Drayk Duncan (11) in the fifth.
Looking to
add more, Bishop Noll loaded the bases with one out in the top of the
seventh. Andy Loomis (12) then walked to
force in a run. Chris Kopp (12) hit into
a forceout at home on a ground ball to first and Bobos lined to third, shutting off a potential big inning.
For Bishop
Noll, it was their second state championship, having taken home the trophy in
