Lafayette Central Catholic Wins Class A State Championship

Lafayette Central Catholic (30-5) cruised past Shakamak (21-10) by a score of 12-1 at Victory Field in the Class A championship of the 41st Annual IHSAA Baseball State Finals.

Central Catholic senior pitcher Samuel Walker set a Class A state finals record for fewest hits allowed with a complete game one-hitter. The previous record of three hits was set in 2001 by Jacob Burnett of Triton.

Walker’s record setting night on the mound was also highlighted by his stellar performance at the plate finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles in the game.

As a team, Lafayette Central Catholic tied the state finals record for most hits in a Class A game with 15. They also tied a Class A finals record for most RBI’s with eight.

Knights freshman third-baseman Reed Drysdale got the action started in the first, doubling over the left fielder’s head. Drysdale later scored on a single by junior Jade Anthrop. Anthrop would later score on a double steal to give the Knights an early 2-0 advantage.

The scoring continued for the Knights in the second inning as they scored their first run on a bases loaded walk by Drysdale and added two more following a costly Shakamak fielding error. Central Catholic held a 5-0 advantage after two innings of play.

Walker doubled and scored on a single by junior Griffin Richeson in the fourth. Richeson advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single to center field by Drysdale extending the lead to 7-0.

Walker took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Shakamak junior third-baseman Justin Cox broke it up with a base hit to left field. The Lakers scored their only run of the night when Cox was plated on a sacrifice fly to right by senior pitcher Tyler Utterback.

The Knights added five insurance runs in the sixth ensuring their second state championship.

Shakamak, led by first-year head coach Matt Fougerousse, finishes its season with a record of 21-10. The Laker seniors were state runners-up three of their fours years—2004, 2006 and 2007.

Central Catholic captures its second state baseball title, the first coming in 2004 also against Shakamak.  The Knights, coached by 10th year skipper Tim Bordenet, finish the season with a 30-5 record.

Steven McNabb of Shakamak named L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award Winner

Steven McNabb of Shakamak High School was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in Class A baseball.

Steven’s volunteer work includes Habitat for Humanity, Greene County Babe Ruth baseball and the Katrina Relief efforts.

For the Lakers, McNabb hit .379 as an All-Conference catcher in his senior year and was named to the All-Academic Team for both the Tri-River and Southwestern Indiana athletic conferences. He was a 3-year member of the basketball team and was voted to the All-Conference Team in that sport as well this year. In addition, he lettered in cross country his freshman year.

He was winner of the National Scholar/Athletic Award from the US Army and the Humanities and Science Award from Rochester University.

He is the son of Bo and Cindy McNabb.
