33rd Baseball State Finals field
includes six first-time finalists
Six first-time state finalists, a school that came within one game of a state title in 1998 and another former state runner-up comprise the field in Saturday's 33rd Annual IHSAA Baseball State Finals at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
Carroll of Fort Wayne, Jimtown, Lawrence North, Madison, Milan and Park Tudor are in the state finals for the first time. Evansville Mater Dei reached the Class 2A state finals last year, falling to Alexandria 4-3 in the championship game. McCutcheon was the 1994 state runner-up to Penn in the single-class format.
Of the eight teams remaining from the 377 that began sectional play three weeks ago, Park Tudor (Class A) and Madison (Class 3A) were ranked No. 1 in their respective class in the final Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll. The poll was issued just prior to the start of tournament play.
Meanwhile, Class A finalist Milan and Class 3A finalist Carroll are one game away from a state championship after finishing the regular season unranked. Evansville Mater Dei was No. 4 in the final Class 2A poll, while Jimtown was sixth. In Class 4A, Lawrence North was ranked fourth and McCutcheon was fifth.
There were only two head-to-head meetings this season among the state finalists, with Lawrence North posting victories over Park Tudor and Madison.
CLASS A
Park Tudor enters with a eight-game winning streak. Of its four losses this season, three came to Class 4A opponents. The Panthers also captured the Marion County Tournament title at mid-season. In tournament play, the Panthers have knocked off No. 8-ranked Wapahani in the regional and No. 3-ranked South Central (Union Mills) in the semi-state. Park Tudor is hitting .405 as a team, with five players batting over .400. The Panthers are led by senior pitcher/shortstop Todd Grant at .591 with 11 doubles and 43 RBI. Grant also is the ace of the pitching staff with an 11-4 record, 99 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA in 86 innings.
For Milan, the Indians have been on a tournament roll after losing three of their last four regular-season games. The Indians punctuated that streak last week by eliminating No. 7-ranked Rockville to win the Northview Semi-State title.
Milan's top hitter is senior first baseman Ronnie Kennett at .360 with 12 doubles and 31 RBI. Senior Fredi Mattl is the top pitcher, with an 8-2 record in 81 innings. He has 94 strikeouts and a 2.93 ERA.
CLASS 2A
Evansville Mater Dei looks to go one step farther in search of its first baseball state title. The Wildcats return four seniors -- Dustin Macke, Ike Miller, Nick Miller and Adam Schiff -- from the 1998 Class 2A championship game. Offensively, Schiff is the top hitter with a .443 batting average, 10 doubles and 33 RBI. Right behind is Macke at .438 with 32 RBI. He also is 9-2 on the mound with a 2.02 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 66 innings. The Wildcats enter with a seven-game winning streak, including a 11-3 North Central Semi-State championship game victory over No. 2-ranked Hagerstown.
Earlier this school year, Nick Miller won three matches at 160 pounds in the state team wrestling finals to help Evansville Mater Dei to its fifth consecutive state title and sixth overall. In football, Adam Schiff led the state in passing yardage per game for the 1998 season with a 259.2 average and 3,370 yards overall with 29 touchdowns. He ranks second on the state's career passing chart with 8,743 yards. His key target in 1998 was Ike Miller, who ranked 10th in receiving yards per game with 84.1.
Like Evansville Mater Dei, Jimtown is trying to finish the school year with a second state championship. The Jimmies won their second consecutive undefeated Class 2A football state title last November. Their march to the baseball state finals has been dominating, with the offense scoring in double figures five times in six games. They escaped a 13-12 extra-inning slugfest to eliminate No. 3-ranked Fort Wayne Luers in the Warsaw Regional, and downed No. 10-ranked Boone Grove in the Lafayette Jefferson Semi-State opener.
The Jimmies have three players batting over .400, topped by senior first baseman/pitcher Joshua Rider at .523 with 13 doubles and 54 RBI. Rider is 10-4 on the mound, with a 1.62 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 86 innings.
Jimtown has several players who also participated in the 1998 state finals, including Eskew Mental Attitude Award recipient Craig Hisey at first base and record-setting kicker Robert Menchinger at shortstop. As a junior, Menchinger already owns the state career PAT record with 210. He set the Class 2A championship game field goal record last fall with a 47-yarder.
CLASS 3A
Carroll arrives with an eight-game winning streak and victories over three ranked teams in its last four tournament games. The unranked Chargers downed No. 9-ranked Peru 10-0 in the sectional final, ousted No. 4 Kankakee Valley in the semi-state opener and eliminated No. 10 Plymouth in the semi-state finals to reach the state finals for the first time. They join the school's volleyball team (1988) and boys soccer team (1994) as state finalists, but could become Carroll's first state championship team.
Sophomore infielder Kyle Wynn has the team's top batting average at .458, followed by senior pitcher/outfielder Jon Dove at .404. Dove also has been the pitching workhorse, with 118 strikeouts in 90 innings.
Madison came close to its first baseball state finals appearance a year ago, falling to eventual state champion Jasper 9-8 in the semi-state finals. This time, the top-ranked Cubs broke through by eliminating the host Wildcats 3-2 in the semi-state opener and following with a 4-0 triumph over Roncalli. This is Madison's first appearance in an IHSAA state finals for a team sport since boys basketball in 1962. Madison's only losses this season were to Class 4A state finalist Lawrence North in the second game of the year and to Franklin in the regular-season finale.
Senior pitcher/infielder Bryan Bullington leads the way with a 14-0 record that includes a 1.61 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 87 innings. He's also batting .392 with nine doubles and 28 RBI. Madison's big run producer is junior infielder/pitcher Chris Bass with a .485 average, 13 doubles, 13 homers and 48 RBI.
CLASS 4A
In two of its first six games this season, Lawrence North posted victories over teams that would reach the state finals. The Wildcats downed Madison 10-3 in their season opener, and topped Park Tudor 14-2 three weeks later. In five tournament games, they've pitched two shutouts and limited the other three opponents to one run each. Their strong pitching has been led by senior Kenny Hughes, who has compiled a 13-1 record while recording 116 strikeouts in 94 innings with a 1.49 ERA. He's also their top hitter with a .485 average, 13 homers and 54 RBI.
This is the ninth McCutcheon team to reach the state finals in a team sport, and it would become the first to win a state title if the Mavericks prevail. The Mavericks have come on strong down the stretch, winning 14 of their last 16 regular season games and five tournament games. The regular-season run included three victories on their way to the Olympic Conference tournament championship.
Among its regulars, senior second baseman Matt Kennedy sports the highest batting average at .462 along with 19 doubles. Senior Pat Lowrey is the top pitcher with a 10-1 record, 75 strikeouts and a 2.38 ERA in 85 innings.
Following each game, the state championship and runner-up trophies and medals will be presented on the field to the members of each team. The L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award will be presented in each of the four classes. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance that will be presented to the school of each recipient.
