Bishop Chatard Repeats As State Champion; Ties Record With Sixth Title

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard jumped out to a 17-0 first half lead and never looked back in repeating as Class 3A state champion with its 31-12 victory over Andrean.

It was a rematch of last year’s title game and, unlike previous rematches in tournament history, the defending state champion was victorious. In the three previous rematches, the champion fell the second time around. Chatard defeated Andrean, 3-0, in the lowest scoring championship game in tournament history one year ago.

With the victory, the 15-0 Trojans of coach Tom Dilley equaled the state record with their sixth championship currently shared with Ben Davis (plays for 5A title tonight), Sheridan and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (won 2A last evening). Chatard has never lost a state championship game.

Bishop Chatard scored on its first two possessions to take a 10-0 first quarter lead on Dray Mason’s 37 yard run and Aaron Charles’ 25 yard field goal. Bart Early’s eight yard run at 8:38 of the second quarter extended the lead before Andrean finally got on the board.

A 13 yard run by Roco Marcinak with 4:49 remaining before halftime made it 17-6, but the kick for the extra point missed. Chatard responded with another scoring drive capped by Bart Early’s two-yard run with 0:46 left to go for a 24-6 halftime lead.

Trojan quarterback Mike Dury scored on a one yard keeper with 1:41 left in the third quarter and Andrean’s Tyler Harangody caught a six yard pass from quarterback Aaron Babb with 1:43 left in the game for the only two scores of the second half.

First year Andrean coach Wally McCormack guided the 59ers (13-2) to its third championship game, but as in both of its previous appearances, they fell to Chatard for all the marbles.

Game Notes

Chatard Wins Record Sixth Title; Stays Perfect In Championship Games

The Trojans collected their sixth IHSAA football state title with today’s victory equaling the state record also held by Ben Davis (plays Class 5A tonight), Sheridan and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (won Class 2A last night). Chatard, which has never lost a state championship game, previously has won championships in 1983 (2A), 1984 (2A), 1997 (3A), 1998 (3A) and 2001 (3A).

Andrean’s Hurdle

Andrean has appeared in three Class 3A state title games falling each time to Bishop Chatard. The Niners lost 27-24 to Chatard in 1997 and last year, 3-0, in the lowest scoring state championship game in tournament history. Its three runner-up finishes are tied for fifth-most in tournament history. Hobart has seven, while Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, Jasper and NorthWood have four each to their credit.

Chatard’s First Unbeaten Campaign Since 1983

Coach Tom Dilley guided the Chatard team to its first undefeated campaign since its 1983 championship season. That year, the Trojans of Coach Chuck Schwanekamp defeated Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, 20-16, in Class 2A to cap a 14-0 year.

Chatard Disproves Rematch Pattern With Today’s Victory

Quotes

Bishop Chatard Coach Tom Dilley

“We knew Andrean would come into this game with a lot of emotion and that it was important to get off to a good start.  We did get off to the start we wanted and played very fast and confident all day.”

“I thought we did a good job of holding on to the ball and not giving it back to them.  Late in the second half, Andrean did do a good job of moving the ball, but we executed and controlled the ball for most of the game.”

“Offensively, I thought offensive coordinator Vince Lorenzano had a great plan of distributing the ball to a variety of different players and using a sequence of plays that were maybe a little bit out of the norm.  We threw in a few formation wrinkles in that we haven’t shown this year.  We thought they (Andrean) were very solid and we didn’t see anything in their scheme or personnel that we could target.  Our plan was to just keep them off balance and attack them.”

“Defensively – Because they are so balanced, our plan was just to play our base defense and keep it simple for our kids to make plays.  I think we were fairly smart to keep it simple and not try to make up too many new things at this point of the season.”

Bishop Chatard Quarterback Mike Dury

“Coach stressed to us that we had to execute. He stressed that our running game was very important to winning a state title. And when it calls for a pass that our guys step up and make a play.”

Andrean Coach Wally McCormack

“They came out and put a lot of pressure on us and we had a couple of turnovers. We also had a very difficult time stopping their run early and we couldn’t get anything going offensively. Next thing you know, they’re up a couple of touchdowns and our game plan is out the window.”

“We didn’t play very well, we just got beat today. But a lot of that is Chatard. I don’t want to take anything away from them. They are a very good football team. Our players have nothing to be ashamed of.”

“It was hard after we got behind early. We’ve been pretty balanced with the run and the pass all year. We wanted to run the ball more, but when you’re down as much as we were we couldn’t run as much and we had to pass.”

(On the season) “The players did a nice job all year. Last year we were down here. As a first year head coach I was very fortunate to step in with a lot of talent. Our seniors represented the school very well.”

“They are an extremely quick team. On defense they are quick on the perimeter and have a lot of nice players on defense. We are a perimeter team so that made it difficult for us.”
