Tournament History

The first year “semi-state” games were played was 1981 when the tournament expanded from 24 to 48 teams in each of three classes and a fourth week was added to the format. Semi-state games were the third round contests just prior to the state championship games.

The next format change came in 1983, when the tournament expanded to four classes and, for the first of two years, the state used a “cluster” system to its select play-off teams. All schools were grouped into “clusters” of four to six teams prior to the regular season and the team with the greatest number of victories over opponents from within their cluster would earn a play-off spot. The same four-round tournament that began in 1981 continued through 1984.

The most recent major change to the state tournament occurred in 1985 when the state expanded to five classes and the format was altered allowing all member schools to participate regardless of regular season record. A six-week tournament was installed with the first three rounds known as sectionals, followed by the regional, semi-state and state championship game. That same format continues today.

Again, the list below includes schools that have won semi-state championships since the term was first used with the 1981 football tournament.
