Evansville North wins
first IHSAA boys golf title
Shooting a final-round 305, Evansville North won its first championship June 15, 2000 in the 64th IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at Prestwick Country Club in Avon.
Led by a 147 from senior Jason Jones, the top-ranked Huskies fired a 36-hole total of 608 to finish nine strokes ahead of runner-up Carmel. Zionsville was third at 624, followed by Marion (326), Center Grove (328) and Lafayette Jefferson (328).
The individual title was claimed by Mike Schumaker of Columbia City. The senior followed a first-round 73 with a 71 to finish at even-par 144. Jones of Evansville North was second, followed by Kevin Wiseman of South Bend Riley at 148.
It was the first IHSAA boys golf state championship for an Evansville school and only the second by a Southern Indiana school in the past 35 years. Overall it’s the second state championship for Evansville North, the other coming in boys basketball in 1967.
Other scores for the victorious Huskies were: junior Jeff Overton 77-77-154, senior Kyle Brinker 77-78-155, senior Mike Birkenfeld 75-81-156 and senior Zach Smith 81-77-158. Evansville North’s 36-hole team score of 608 is the fifth lowest in tournament history. In the 14 years the tournament has been conducted at Prestwick, the score ranks second only to Noblesville’s record-setting 599 in 1998.
Evansville North took a six-stroke lead over Crown Point into the second round, which didn’t begin until 2:30. The first round, which had been suspended Wednesday after heavy rains made the Prestwick layout unplayable, ended at 1:15 p.m. The second round was played via a shotgun start with a foursome on every hole that allowed for the tournament to finish just ahead of darkness.
The original field of 21 teams was cut to 13 after the first round. Additionally, 15 players from non-advancing teams also qualified for the second round.
After a stormy day on Wednesday, second-day conditions were ideal. The day saw a high temperature in the low 80s with sunny skies, low humidity and a light breeze. The par-72 course played at 6,700 yards for the second round.
Schumaker named IHSAA
Mental Attitude Award Recipient
Mike Schumaker of Columbia City was named the 2000 recipient of the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award by the IHSAA Executive Committee.
The four-year varsity performer became the first player from Columbia City to win individual medalist honors with an even-par 144. He was a four-time All-Northeast Indiana Conference selection in golf and also a four-year performer in basketball.
Academically, Schumaker ranked second in his senior class of 224 students. He is a member of the National Honor Society and will attend Northwestern University.
Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Columbia City High School in the name of Schumaker.
